A year ago I had to write with less than enthusiasm about the Old Engine House, thereby incurring a wigging from the lady wife, who had been there on another occasion and took a different view to mine.

Peking Restaurant

Close to the Grafton Centre with its cinema and interesting range of shops the Peking enjoys a good reputation in Cambridge and has been described as the best Chinese in the city. Whether or not this has anything to do with their prices is debatable, and some would argue that for the quality and extent of the food the prices are fair.

Pheasant Inn

Forget the frills, be comfortable and enjoy good, wholesome food in this ancient thatched and beamed inn. Here is good honest food, beautifully prepared and served with grace. Starters could be pan-fried ox tongue with polenta and ceps, or a single ravioli filled with shredded casseroled beef, served with truffled spring cabbage.

Phoenix, The

It says much for the influence of Chinese cuisine that there should be at least two Chinese restaurants of such quality as Phoenix in Cambridgeshire villages. This pub conversion in Histon, marked by two protective lions at the door, otherwise virtually indistinguishable from its previous purpose, specialises in Peking and Szechuan cuisine.
