If big restaurant chains have their loyalists, so do the little ones, seldom failing to please the palates of hungry diners. Clocktower is a lively town centre restaurant, under ten minutes, on foot, from the underground station and picturesque Epping Forest.

Their dedication to providing delicious food shines through simple dishes such as chicken liver terrine with red onion marmalade and toast, grilled fishcakes, lemon grass infused baked sea bass, or penne pasta tossed with vine tomatoes, basil and garlic. A traditional Sunday roast is served from 12 noon, and if you have any dietary requirements, they are always happy to help.

Dine or just relax and cool down with a few drinks in the heated garden terrace situated to the rear of the restaurant. A lively wine list should meet most tastes.

A 15th century manor house setting in the heart of Constable County is one that may allure those who seek respite from the bustle of daily life and then more, the Fountain House restaurant that overlooks the pond and the gardens of Dedham Hall - a scene of idyllic tranquillity. The interior also has that beaming glow aided by candle lights and contrasting chair and tablecloths.

The cooking pivots to the European region with a modern approach, so right after a bowl of watercress soup or a plate of mixed smoked fish hors d'oeuvres, lamb kidneys with mustard sauce and slices of beef fillet with wild mushrooms and red wine could follow. Desserts are every fruit lover's dream with raspberry vacherin, peach Melba and lemon tart with vanilla ice cream.

Those like to have a brush with creativity can avail themselves of courses in art for residents and non-residents alike at Dedham Hall.

An old smugglers' inn, the Peldon Rose exudes character and charm. With 500 years of hospitality behind them it's no wonder they know exactly what their patrons want. Located just outside historic Colchester, on the way to Mersea Island, it has undergone a refurbishment and presents a refreshing new face.

At the Peldon Rose expect good local food made with fresh produce, notably Mersea Island fish and quality butcher meats. Whet the appetite with deep fried Brie with raspberry sauce, corn fed chicken goujons or Maldon smoked salmon. Then move on to a ploughman's, sirloin baguette or smoked haddock Florentine. For the main course relish slow braised lamb shank, farmhouse omelette or tiger prawns linguine. End the satisfying meal with sticky date pudding, lemon meringue parfait or caramelized rice pudding. A wide range of robust ales and fine new and old world wines is excuse enough for the Peldon Rose's patrons to linger on. There are facilities here for children and the physically challenged.

Do not allow yourself to be deterred on arrival! This 16th century cottage in Moulsham Street may have a non-descript frontage, but it's a very different story inside. The ancient interior has absorbed Thai culture to create a happy blend of styles which even the most talented makeover team would be hard put to equal.

There is the main menu for us ordinary mortals whilst those of a vegetarian disposition can sample the special menu, which manages to make even hardened carnivores take a second, or third even, glance. Most of the food is straightforward but there are also less predictable ones like the golden triangle, Siam gulf fruits de mer and sweet and sour melody. The curries are a nice combination of flavours as are stir-fries and grilled

dishes. The staff are particularly helpful when it comes to working your way through that magnificent main menu. If you are on a really tight budget call in at the Siam Cottage for an express lunch.
