The Hunny Bell
The Green, nr Holt, NR24 2AA [Map]
The Hunny Bell sits on the Green in the picturesque village of Hunworth in the beautiful Glaven valley two miles south of the Georgian North Norfolk market town of Holt. It is a wonderful 18th century pub with a traditional beamed main bar and cosy snug, recently sensitively restored to create a tavern which retains its historic character. With a new terrace overlooking the meadows and a charming old world English garden the venue combines all the wonderful characteristics for which English pubs are famous with proper modern facilities to ensure the comfort, safety and happiness of guests.
The kitchen lays emphasis on traditional food rather than the gastro route. Traditional favourites feature heavily with homemade suet crust steak and kidney pie, half a pint of prawns and home cooked hand carved ham, eggs and chips and a traditional apple and rhubarb crumble proving to be some of the most popular dishes off the menu.

The Wiveton Bell
Blakeney Road, Wiveton, Holt, NR25 7TL [Map]
After a major overhaul this traditional Norfolk Inn, located in one of the lushest parts of that very special county, has emerged with an image rather more in keeping with the times. However, you don't dispose of the 18th century easily and the feel of antiquity has been skilfully retained.
Inside, the pub has been opened up into a large cheerful space, a conservatory extension added on to the back, outbuildings pressed into use, all with a décor that is warm and friendly without being chic. Those who are not over-keen on conservatory additions for eating out could pass on this one which can claim to be so much a part of the original as to be a really pleasant experience, with large handsome candlesticks dividing the spaces. In winter a thoroughly genuine fire radiates heat from the inglenook. An energetic staff of comely girls and friendly, efficient young men see to it that service is up to the mark.

The Anchor Inn
Morston, Holt, NR25 7AA [Map]
The Anchor Inn sits just down the road from an elegant hotel and restaurant reviewed elsewhere in this guide, and could be described in the nicest possible way as the other end of the market. Both are excellent in their own manner, you take your choice.
At the Anchor, long the natural habitat of the Temple family who run the boats to Blakeney Point, you can book for the Point and be sure of coming back to a quickly served, attractive meal.
Try the locally smoked mackerel served hot and buttered with horseradish for starters. Trouble is with such a cornucopia from the sea available the temptation to stray little on the menu is great. For instance the humble fish and chips takes on a new dimension with a locally caught cod, perfectly deep-fried and served with mushy peas.
I'm afraid after that it's too late so it's treacle sponge and custard - a word in the ear of one of the pretty waitresses should secure you a second helping of treacle and negative custard.
All the fish comes from Willy Weston in nearby Blakeney, Howells the Butchers from Binham do their wonderful meats and Mr Ollie of the North Elmham Bakery produces all the bread.

Morston Hall Restaurant
Morston Hall, Morston, Holt, NR25 7AA [Map]

With three red rosettes and a Michelin award, it is apparent that food is taken very seriously at the Morston Hall, and dishes such as grilled fillet of sea bass and confit leg of Gressingham duck on sautéed Lyonnaise potatoes with seasonal vegetables and thyme infused jus feature on the menu. Think poached peach and vanilla cream ice to ring down the curtain.
