This charming pub has stood in the same spot, at the centre of Bramfield, for many centuries and continues its tradition of serving delicious food and excellent drink to its loyal patrons. Should you find yourself in one of the nearby seaside towns or villages and feel the need for a rejuvenating lunch or dinner, then the Queens Head is the perfect choice with its warm and friendly atmosphere and delightful country inn ambience. A sunny garden tucked away behind the pub provides lovely al fresco opportunities.

Fresh, local ingredients are used extensively in the menus and a typical starter might be chicken liver and brandy pate served with Cumberland sauce and toast followed by a Darsham steak, kidney and Adnams ale pie with a short crust pastry lid and vegetables. A wide selection of homemade vegetarian meals are always available. Desserts include a steamed strawberry jam sponge pudding and a selection of ice creams, sorbets and cheeses. The wine list is interesting with several organic choices alongside beers, ales and ciders.

The White Lion Hotel in Aldeburgh has a remarkable location; it looks right across the shingle beach and from its many rooms, guests can enjoy some marvellous views of the sea that go as far as the eye can see. This traditional hotel is much like a balm for the soul whose nerves are frayed on a regular basis thanks to the pressures of everyday life. The soothing and serene atmosphere there is only matched by the warm and friendly welcome you are bound to receive.

The newly refurbished AA rosette winning Restaurant 1563 is a delight for gastronomes on the look out to extend their culinary relationship with  Suffolk. Local fish is literally a hop away with many of their suppliers just on the beach opposite the hotel, so amongst starters, expect to find flaked smoked mackerel with horseradish capers and melba toast followed by baked salmon with potato salad and chunky gazpacho. End with the strawberry shortbread with vanilla cream or maybe something from the selection of ice creams and sorbets.

Pizza Express remains a hugely popular bedrock of casual eating. Its popularity is testimony to the fact that across the country, they have restaurants where you will always be guaranteed a good nosh, with children's tastes being well catered for.

Pizza Express has gone even more Roman, and following the success of that particular example of listening to their public have introduced Romana pizzas, including the scorching Etna and the hearty Siciliana.

These pizzas are now thinner, bigger and crispier, and if that sounds like a marketing line, it is. However, unlike many such lines, this one is true, and their quality is always consistent, though cleverly they have still managed to retain a homemade feel to their pizzas.

As an alternative to pizza, try their pollo pesto - cavatappi pasta with torn chicken breast, mushrooms, red onions and mozzarella in a creamy gruyere, parmesan and pesto sauce and finished with grana padano - or the niçoise salad with mixed leaves, yellowfin tuna, free range egg, green beans, potatoes and tomatoes with olives, anchovies, capers and house dressing.

Many of the big chains have come a long way, and Pizza Express is certainly amongst them. One of the first to be quoted on the Stock Exchange - in 1993 - Pizza Express is not a franchise operation and retains tight control through its own staff.

Their wine list - though short - contains some surprisingly good offerings, especially their intense Australian Chardonnay, and a big, full-bodied Merlot from Cusumano, Sicilia.

Avid fans of horse racing will not be unfamiliar with Newmarket, where much of the action takes place, and whether you're an old hand at it or visiting the races for the first time, the Heath Court Hotel is an excellent place to stay. Elegant and comfortable rooms make your visit memorable and the excitement in the atmosphere becomes palpable as there are some marvellous views of horses out training. Their newly remodelled restaurant Berties has a pleasant atmosphere and offers casual and relaxed dining with delicious, traditional home cooked food.

The menu offers a host of tantalising dishes beginning with mussels cooked in white wine, cream, shallots and garlic followed by a main course of sautéed chicken breast on spiced couscous with cherry tomatoes and shallots. The grills are superb so be sure to try the rib eye steak with home cut chips and mushrooms and end with a rosemary infused rich chocolate torte. The bar is stocked with cocktails, beers and a good selection of fine wines.

Situated in a building that was once a natural history museum, Arlingtons Brasserie is distinguished by its French style cooking and smart stylish ambience. A takeaway deli and café-bar make it ideal for a quick stop too. Its Darwin Room can be hired for small parties and a gallery overlooks the brasserie for a more intimate dining experience.

Start the day here with a traditional English breakfast or take a break with afternoon tea. If a full meal is what calls, then step into the spacious dining room. You could begin with chicken liver pâté or a seafood gratin. Then, move on to a chicken chasseur, free range chicken breast in a white wine, tomato, mushroom and herb sauce, beef bourguignon or traditional fish pie. The salad selection includes stilton, pear and watercress, Greek salad and crab salad niçoise. Top a satisfying lunch with crème caramel or a chocolate almond gateau. The wine bar offers a range of champagne and wines by the glass as well as local ale and specialty beers.

The magnificent Seckford Hall Hotel in Woodbridge boasts beautiful grounds and luxurious accommodation, and is a popular venue for romantic weddings, conferences and banquets. This Tudor manor is also ideally located should you wish to explore the Heritage coast and there are also plenty of leisure activities to keep you pleasantly occupied. Their 2 AA rosette restaurant has a sophisticated ambience with its oak panelled dining room, crisp linen covered tables and sparkling glasses to set the mood.

Locally sourced ingredients feature largely in the menus which demonstrate a love for simple but perfectly cooked fare. Try the rope grown Loch Fyne mussels with Aspall cider, spring onion and cream to begin and then move on to sautéed fillet of cod with thyme and gruyère gratin, young fennel and red wine fumet. Finally, end with the buttermilk pannacotta with winter berries and shortbread biscuit. The wine list at Seckford Hall is extensive and global offering a wide variety of choices to suit all tastes and occasions.
