A place with an excellent reputation for good value. One could commence with the samosas of ham, black pudding and apple with a lentil dressing and progress comfortably to the fillet of cod with a parsley cream sauce, trying to forget that in all likelihood it never swam in British territorial waters, ending up with a poached pear and ginger ice cream.

Chalice, The

One of Bury St Edmunds's best kept secrets, this restaurant is tucked away in the quiet part of Cannon Street but just a few minutes' walk from the town centre. A cosy, converted Victorian cottage and bakery - the original bakers' oven remains - with a delightful courtyard garden, which provides the perfect back drop for an intimate dinner for two or a party gathering.

What a fun night we had at Charlie Chan's on Regent Street! Our daughter with husband and their two boys descended on the place early out of deference to the boys - so early we had to break out of Evensong at King's College (try doing it some time).
