Everyone knows that Benugo delivers what it promises. This London chain began in 1998 as an effort to provide tasty and healthy lunchtime and breakfast alternatives to most of the busy populace who prefer to eat on the go. Today, it has evolved into a reputed brand name and what emerges from within their deli counters is excellent and often just the right antidote to a busy stressful day. Their stores are spread across the city and Benugo shops can even be found in some museums and galleries, providing a much needed endorphin boost at all times.

Their deli counter is stocked with only the best of ingredients and you can watch your sandwich being prepared in front of you. Try some of their signature combinations such as the New Yorker, a rye and caraway rustic bread filled with British turkey, crispy bacon, Gruyere with Dijon mayo, lettuce and tomato. Their coffee is excellent and they try to make sure that all their products are organic and locally sourced.

Once a Victorian Pub, 50 Cheyne Walk has morphed into an elegant, modern brasserie and salon. The venue offers simple yet luminously executed brasserie dishes in a luxurious, Chlesea riverside setting.

The pale olive exterior hints at the Gallic charm within, while frosted windows are reminiscent of a Rive Gauche brasserie. Inside old meets new: sky blue banquettes sit alongside carver chairs in rich crimson, while simple wood floors contrast with dazzling ornate chandeliers. At the centre of the Belle Epoque dining room is an open grill where much of the Provencal inspired bill of fare is prepared.

Start with onion soup and scallops wrapped in Parma ham with grilled asparagus and a tomato confit, followed by, stuffed turkey with prunes and hazelnuts, gnocchi and thyme velouté. End with poached pear in red wine with butterscotch ice cream.

ASK Italian - Gloucester Arcade

For some time I made the mistake of thinking that no group of restaurants in the region of 200 locations could hope to maintain the quality for which I was looking.

Then one day I decided to put my prejudices to the test, walked into Oxford ASK Italian! and discovered that I could not have been more mistaken. Their claim to serve freshly prepared quality food in stylish and comfortable surroundings with friendly and efficient service proved to be absolutely spot on.

Since then I have also discovered that a degree of consistency seems to operate throughout their restaurants, and that certainly does take some achieving, implying a degree of management that is enviable. They are perfect places for an impromptu snack, a bit of culinary grazing, or the full works, and families are catered for particularly well.

Their trendy décor usually comprises tiled floors and black furniture with well set tables that sparkle with glass, silver and spotless linen. Ten starters include crostini and bruschetta, followed by a range of salads, pasta and al forno, oven baked pasta, some with chicken.

The pizzas are stone baked in the oven, creating a crisp, authentic and delicious flavour, and they all come topped with mozzarella and tomato. Calzone introduce a touch of opulence with a folded pizza baked in the oven and topped with garlic butter and melted grana padano, whilst inside expect to find chicken or a vegetarian mix.

Amongst the specials may I warmly, in every sense, recommend the polpette al forno, a popular Milanese dish of beef meatballs sautéed in garlic with fire roasted peppers, caramelised onions, chilli and pomodoro sauce, with penne pasta, topped with cheese and oven baked.

An enticing selection of desserts list banoffee pie and tiramisu amongst them, and the coffee tastes like coffee, which may sound banal, but I guess you know what I mean.

Thanks to a well selected wine list speculative drinking can offer handsome dividends, even with prices rarely crossing the £20 barrier.

If your culinary conception of London is built around expensive restaurants or not-so-expensive-less-quality eateries then think again, as there are still places like Byron that offer some good value food to those on a tight budget. Well, how can anyone go wrong with a burger, you may ask, but this burger chain is not just about a slab of meat slapped between two halves of a bun, here the meat is sourced from small farms, the cattle roam freely in the Scottish Highlands, and the hamburgers are freshly ground every day; surely it can't get more simple than that.

The menu opens up an abundance of inexpensive delights, starting with burgers stuffed with dry cure bacon, mature cheddar, Byron sauce, or corn fed chicken fillet with tomato, mayo and baby spinach. Their salads are a wonderful melange of fresh ingredients such as squash and feta unified by garlic and parsley dressing, and buffalo mozzarella and Portobello mushroom with crispy bacon, almonds and cos lettuce dressed with honey balsamic. Desserts include the indulgent banoffee pie and caramel and honeycomb sundae.
