Napket Chelsea

Well, here's something with a difference. To describe Napket as a café is to restore the true meaning to the word, particularly if you add 'boutique' and 'delicatessen'. Well, here's something with a difference. To describe Napket as a café is to restore the true meaning to the word, particularly if you add 'boutique' and 'delicatessen'. This is the recreation of café society in London's King's Road, beautifully designed by Peter van Hooreweghe, quite small, but already wildly popular.

You can eat big or small here, but be sure that either way you will eat well and imaginatively from breakfast onwards, with club sandwiches, salads and European puddings well to the fore.

To enjoy such sophisticated surroundings and food you would think could leave your wallet severely wounded, but not a bit of it, the value is amazing.

This is an exciting addition to the London scene. Just hope the 25 covers are sufficient to keep it viable.

The Market Place is so named as it's attached to the Chelsea Farmers' Market, making this a popular place with local Chelsea residents doing their weekly grocery shop at the market. The place is particularly popular during the hot summer months when the outdoor terrace gets packed out with diners. The menu is classic brasserie fare with Mediterranean style salads and char-grilled dishes galore, nothing out of the norm, but well prepared and presented nevertheless.

From being a small pancake house in London's West End in 1958, My Old Dutch chain has come a long way and continues to serve sweet and savoury pancakes as well as a selection of salads, Dutch starters and desserts in all of its restaurants. With outlets in Kensington, Holborn, Chelsea and Ealing, the interior of light walls and scrubbed pine chairs certainly have something to do with the warm atmosphere inside, making it a perfect place to enjoy tasty food with the family or friends.

The menu takes in dishes such as starters of marinated herring fillets with beetroot, gherkins and green salad, and Dutch meatballs with mustard sauce. Their renowned pancakes include a variety of fillings such as chilli con carne, sautéed apple and smoked bacon, honey and slices of lemon, and a selection of seafood.

My Old Dutch also offers specialized beers such as Amstel, Hoegaarden, Grolsch alongside exciting real fruit beers, milkshakes and smoothies.

Tartine Restaurant and Bar

A fascinating addition to the London culinary scene, Tartine offers French open-faced sandwiches, the contents of which are wilfully rich and tempting beyond reason. Think bruschetta, add indulgence and you have it. Here they use poilâne; a sort of bucolic sourdough bread toasted using olive oil, it is then served with a wide variety of fillings with minute steak and caramelised onions as a typical winner, but be sure not to ignore the combination of shredded duck, ginger, cucumber and plum sauce

Whether the Earl of Sandwich, the inventor of that very English piece of cuisine, would be amused at the price of nearly £10 is open to question. But then he would have reckoned it's without the elaborate touches that accompanies each carefully tuned offering. Main courses like roasted cod, borlotti beans, chorizo and tomatoes, and puddings rate well too. Innovation, as opposed to meddling, is always to be welcomed and as such Tartine deserves to prosper.

Delectable appetisers are certainly such as the lamb seekh chaat with the succulent tandoori baked lamb kebabs offset by the taste of onions, green chillies, coriander leaves and tangy spices set the tone. Delicate flavours of spices also come through vividly in main courses of salmon ajwani tikka marinated with garlic, yogurt and lovage seeds, as do some of their more creative dishes like lobster malai curry cooked in a creamy sauce with cashew nuts, cumin and coriander, and officer lamb chops in a honey and soya sauce. An assortment of fresh, hand-made breads or rice flavoured with lime, saffron or mushrooms make superb accompaniments.
