Mission, The
116 Wandsworth Bridge Road, Fulham, London, SW6 2TF [Map]
Established for thirteen years now, Mission Restaurant, just off the New King's Road, has a successful formula that continues to produce predominantly fusion menus that are extensive, offering something for all tastes, and is well worth a visit.
Favourites range from crispy chilli squid with lemon oil and red onion marmalade, sizzle plates of rib eye steak in lemongrass or chicken in garlic and lime, 10oz Aberdeen steaks and honey roasted ribs through to delicately flavoured traditional curries, and inspired pacific rim and pan Asian influenced dishes, which all come at excellent value for money prices.
Staff are professional yet friendly, whilst well thought out music and a warm decor make frequently returning guests feel welcome. An extremely well executed cocktail is almost irresistible at the bar before dinner, or at the high bar table that seats six for nibbles and drinks.
Group numbers are restricted, which means Mission's relaxed but vibrant ambience is never interrupted. All food on the menu is also available to take away.
Current special offers include £12.95 for two courses (starter and main), Monday to Wednesday, and £14.95 (2 courses, starter and main), Thursday to Sunday, pre booking necessary for both, whilst there is also 33% off all food before 7 pm daily.
Mission certainly accomplished!

The Butcher's Hook
477 Fulham Road, London, SW6 1HL [Map]
This is a place with more than a bit of history. Just over a century ago the deal that saw the foundation of the Chelsea Football Club was signed in an upstairs room. Both Club and Pub have hit the high spots since then. Resisting the temptation to cash in on the football crowds, they have created a bar and brasserie at the front, with a dining room towards the back, giving a good social mix. When the days get warm the ground floor windows open fully, with a great feeling of space and fresh air.
A lunch and evening menu changes regularly, so on the evening menu expect to find duck and hazelnut terrine, beer battered haddock goujons with tartare sauce, or roast black leg chicken breast with puy lentils, Jerusalem artichoke, carrots and Madeira. Prunes and Armagnac parfait bring together a good blend of textures and flavours.
The wine list is treasure trove stuff, with something for everybody, at prices that are comfortably affordable. This is a great place, but it's being increasingly discovered - hurry, hurry before it's overrun.

Il Miraggio
510 Fulham Road, London, SW6 5NJ [Map]
Located on Fulham Road Miraggio, is one of those hard to find family run eateries offering authentic Italian cuisine. The cosy and laid back atmosphere offers a fantastic and true Italian dining experience whether with friends, business lunch or a romantic meal for two. The venue has grown popular with visitors and locals alike for the food prepared by Mamma Maria and the quality of service.
Fresh rope mussels in a cherry tomato sauce with parsley and garlic, traditional Neapolitan layers of aubergines with mozzarella, parmesan and basil, and zesty octopus salad with lemon and balsamic vinegar can tickle many a palate. For those who love pasta fettucine with Bolognese ragout sauce, casareccia with diced sword fish, and bucatini with onions and Italian bacon are a few excellent choices. You might want to finish your meal with traditional panna cotta with hazelnut and almond pralines or just settle for a meloncello digestive.

Joe's Brasserie
130 Wandsworth Bridge Road, Fulham, London, SW6 2UL [Map]
Located amidst a plethora of shops on Wandsworth Bridge Road, Joe's Brasserie is a relaxed, friendly place with an enjoyable atmosphere, and at the bar there is plenty to explore for those committed to finding their favourite cocktails.
The food is a contemporary modern British selection, but not astonishingly complex, so dishes might include homemade crab cakes with chilli jam, rocket and lemon; grilled lamb cutlets with potato gratin, braised red cabbage, spinach and jus, and lemon tart with crème fraîche. On Saturdays and Sundays, they are open for brunch, and serve a full English breakfast, in addition to eggs Benedict, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and smoked chicken hash.
As you might expect from owner John Brinkley, there is a superb selection of wines, all sold at wine shop retail prices, not the usual restaurant ones, so this represents some of the best value in London.

Pizza Express - Fulham Road, Fulham
895 Fulham Road, Fulham, London, SW6 5HU [Map]
Pizza Express remains a hugely popular bedrock of casual eating. Its popularity is testimony to the fact that across the country, they have restaurants where you will always be guaranteed a good nosh, with children's tastes being well catered for.
Pizza Express has gone even more Roman, and following the success of that particular example of listening to their public have introduced Romana pizzas, including the scorching Etna and the hearty Siciliana.
These pizzas are now thinner, bigger and crispier, and if that sounds like a marketing line, it is. However, unlike many such lines, this one is true, and their quality is always consistent, though cleverly they have still managed to retain a homemade feel to their pizzas.
As an alternative to pizza, try their pollo pesto - cavatappi pasta with torn chicken breast, mushrooms, red onions and mozzarella in a creamy gruyere, parmesan and pesto sauce and finished with grana padano - or the niçoise salad with mixed leaves, yellowfin tuna, free range egg, green beans, potatoes and tomatoes with olives, anchovies, capers and house dressing.
Many of the big chains have come a long way, and Pizza Express is certainly amongst them. One of the first to be quoted on the Stock Exchange - in 1993 - Pizza Express is not a franchise operation and retains tight control through its own staff.
Their wine list - though short - contains some surprisingly good offerings, especially their intense Australian Chardonnay, and a big, full-bodied Merlot from Cusumano, Sicilia.

El Metro
10-12 Effie Road, London, SW6 1TB [Map]
El Metro is a convivial tapas bar and restaurant in a bustling setting in Fulham Broadway. Their live music and ambience along with traditional Spanish cuisine, transports one right into the heart of that culturally diverse land. The spirited fiesta atmosphere really takes off on Friday and Saturday nights, with flamenco dancing and a live DJ. The restaurant opened in 1989 and is decorated rather simply in warm colours and printed mosaic, with candlelit tables.
The food combines favourites like paella, chorizo and seafood dishes with handmade gourmet burgers and pasta, which means there is something for everyone. Spanish specialities include lamb chops fried Castilian style with garlic, onions and thyme, and if you enjoy seafood, try their grand offering - fritura del mar or even lobster, halved and grilled with a delicious melted cheese topping.
Their wine list complements the food and has house, red and white wines along with cava.
