The Langham London, 1C Portland Place, London, W1B 1JA [Map]
Located in Portland Place with commanding views across the surrounding area Roux at The Landau offers a classically constructed French cuisine with British assistance that follows contemporary inclinations for lighter dishes whilst making no sacrifices to flavour and certainly not to quality.
For the first time in 18 years Albert and Michel Roux, those Michelin-starred and celebrated chefs, are working together in order to bring the legendary Roux gastronomic experience to a second West End address. In the magnificent dining room designed by David Collins, and part of the award-winning luxury Langham Hotel, Roux at The Landau has firmly set its cap at achieving a top placing in London's highly competitive restaurant scene, where dining will acquire that special quality which has already been firmly established at Le Gavroche.
The à la carte draws upon a choice of nine courses with which to set the scene, starting with a lightly creamed white bean velouté with aged Manchego croquettes, celery and pimenton de la vera. A Parker House lobster roll arrives with pickled vegetables and baby gem salad. But for sheer perfection in the seafood scale the seared Orkney scallops with Jerusalem artichoke and truffle are in a class of their own. Belle Isle oysters are on call when the time is right.
There has never been any doubt about the quality of Castle of Mey beef and a grilled rib eye steak from that quarter with pommes Sarladaise and truffle hollandaise underlines the integrity of this finely factored product from one of the best producing locations in Britain.
Seven or so choices of dessert list amongst them a crème brûlée amandine, homemade ice creams and sorbets or a caramelised apple millefeuille with aged Calvados bavarois.
Roux at The Landau is near enough to the theatre scene to provide a just the right sort of setting for some pre-theatre sustenance, where a typical supper might consist of ham hock and foie gras terrine and fresh piccalilli salad provides an alternative to seared cod cheeks with soy glazed eryngli mushrooms and purple broccoli. The classic hare 'Royale' with fresh tagliatelle and cèpe mushrooms run with roast fillet of sea bass with braised leeks and saffron ratte potatoes are succeeded by spiced pumpkin tart with chestnut and rum ice cream.
A tasting menu romps through seven courses and reverting to the other end of the day a breakfast menu fit for a king can be taken via a superb English traditional version, or Chinese, Japanese and Lebanese versions to ring the changes.
Special offers are no stranger to this scene, and these straddle the lunch, dinner and breakfast menus, the latter with a 20% reduction of the food bill.
Brought together with a fine wine list and immaculate service it would seem that nothning can stop Roux at The Landau from achieving its objective of becoming a force with which to be reckoned in West London.

41 Conduit Street, London, W1S 2YF [Map]
In the heart of London's Mayfair, The Gallery Restaurant offers all-day dining, serving Mediterranean cuisine in a sophisticated and elegant setting. Period French décor with silk upholstery, chandeliers, gilt and mirrors lends the restaurant a luxurious but not overly formal ambience. Housed in The Westbury Hotel on Conduit Street, the Gallery is a stone's throw from the boutiques of New Bond Street and is the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street. All the attractions of Soho and Theatreland are short walk away as are the leafy environs of Green Park and Hyde Park.
Inspired by the cuisines of the south of France, the French Riviera and Northern Italy, head Chef Brian Fantoni, formerly of Claridges and The Savoy, has prepared a mouthwatering range of classic Mediterranean dishes using the finest ingredients in an unfussy manner. Dinner could begin with starters of pork and pistachio terrine with Italian lardo and mustard fruits or ballotine of foie gras filled with prune and Banyuls wine and served with toasted brioche.
Main courses could include fillet of red mullet with aromatic couscous, green olives and almond tapenade or lobster with baby leeks, potato gnocchi, kumquat and lobster dressing. Committed carnivores have equally delicious choices such as poached black leg chicken breast with spinach and girolles fricassee or rabbit wrapped in speck with fried polenta, pine nut and raisin dressing. A variety of succulent steaks served with field mushroom, Provençales, tomato and a sauce of your choice also tempt the palate.
The pasta section offers pappardelle with wild boar ragout, cooked in red wine and fresh herbs or velvety langoustine ravioli with fennel and tomato confit.
An incomparable dessert selection includes almond-infused pannacotta with macerated cherries, amaretti crumble and sour cherry sorbet; and Valhrona dark chocolate and olive oil parfait with caramel cream and warm honeyed figs. A selection of farmhouse cheeses served with homemade jam, toasted bread and crackers or Banon AOC with lavender honey is a delicious alternative.
The Gallery also boasts a casual bar that is the perfect setting for a leisurely lunch along with a selection of fixed price options and daily specials. Alongside other fine dining venues including the Alyn Williams at The Westbury; the Polo Bar and the Tsukiji Sushi, the Gallery Restaurant confirms the Westbury Hotel's reputation for fine dining and peerless hospitality.

170 Great Portland Street, London, W1W 5QB [Map]
Villandry originally opened its doors in 1989 on Marylebone High Street, an intimate, endearingly-ramshackle shop full of wonderful smells and delicious goodies. Bursting at the seams it relocated to its current larger, smarter premises on Great Portland Street in November 1997. With oodles of space, a gorgeous Foodstore, informal Restaurant and buzzing Bar were created to establish Villandry as one of Fitzrovia's most popular destinations.
Their team of bakers work throughout the night to produce the very best breads, patisseries and cakes, and undoubtedly the most incredible 100% all butter croissants. While the chefs beaver away in the Villandry kitchens cooking up a huge array of lip-smacking dishes prepared from well-sourced ingredients.
Exciting changes are in progress to ensure Villandry continues to celebrate its heritage by focusing on the very best produce. The gourmet grocer and deli provides a large range of exceptional foods; from the freshest and most flavoursome fruit and vegetables, to wonderfully fresh bread, pastries, chocolate and spices.
The cheese and charcuterie counters are a treat for the taste buds and the take-away counter - for everything from snacks to three-course meals - has queues for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with orders also taken by phone. A diverse range of picnic hampers is also available for that balmy summer's day in the park, at Wimbledon, Lord's or Henley. A full catering service is also available on request. The 100-seat Restaurant and 60-seat Bar are also available for exclusive private hire.
Villandry Restaurant is run by head chef Brian Scully, who leads a team of dedicated chefs. The fresh food is produced without fuss and particular attention is paid to the quality of the ingredients. Its relaxed, European-style ambience continues to woo people from all over London keen to try delicious, uncomplicated flavours in Villandry's simple but excellent cooking.
The Restaurant menu is a short, sharp list of dishes, which covers the full range of carefully sourced, seasonal favourites, including grilled lemon grass prawns with green mango, cashew, tomato and coriander salad, poached chicken terrine with leeks, mushroom and spring onion and not forgetting the mouth-watering peach and raspberry crumble with cream.
For full meals, eat in the Restaurant. For breakfasting, light lunching, snacking, chatting, sipping, gossiping and meeting from morning until night, the Bar is ideal. From 8am you can enjoy boiled eggs with soldiers, Scottish smoked kippers or some Villandry granola and fruit salad. If you are feeling continental, why not have a pain-au-chocolat from the Bakery or some French toast with maple syrup?
For lunch you can choose from the changing menu - crispy, crunchy vegetable salad with cashew nuts and apricot dressing, accompanied by 28 day dry-aged steak - 10oz sirloin with chips and béarnaise before finishing off with a seasonal fruit salad. These are but a few of the excellent choices. A small dinner menu and bar snacks are available in the early evening, with charcuterie and cheese plates available from the deli in the shop.
Free wireless internet access is provided, so you can check your email and surf the net at super speeds, all in the comfort of the Bar.
Villandry Foodstore is a gourmet shop for serious food lovers in central London. It sells the finest quality ingredients sourced from specialist suppliers around the world. Many other items are homemade in the Villandry kitchens and sold either as takeaway meals or served in the Restaurant and Bar.
Their products would shine in the most finely fitted kitchens: olive oils, vinegars, wines, cheese and hams from across Europe; pickles and chutneys; a daily selection of fresh fruit, herbs and vegetables from Secretts Farm; specialist items to order, and enough chocolate to last you through the year. Order bespoke hampers from them as the perfect present or wine by the case. Their wine list is extensive and they are always happy to discuss choices.

Brown's Hotel, 33-34 Albemarle Street, London, W1S 4BP [Map]
HIX at The Albemarle offers guests a truly outstanding British experience. It's more than just about fine British classic cuisine, prepared using local seasonal ingredients, now diners can also admire some of the best British contemporary artwork on display within its elegant interior. It is based inside Mayfair's Brown's Hotel, but feels anything unlike the standard hotel restaurant.
This legendary hotel was not only the first hotel to open in London in 1837, but it was also the first to have a restaurant within it - before then guests dined within the privacy of their rooms or suites. Following a £24 million renovation overseen by Sir Rocco's sister, Olga Polizzi, it now seamlessly blends historical details with contemporary elements.
The beautifully restored wood panelling continues to offer the feeling of old England, and outstanding artwork by leading British artists such as Tracey Emin, Bridget Riley and Rankin bring a welcome contemporary note to the décor. To the delight of many, the banquettes and moss green seating of original days have been recreated by Philip Hurel.
Executive Chef Marcus Verberne, guided by Director of Food Mark Hix, formerly of Le Caprice and The Ivy, has created an outstanding menu of great British classics. The menu is a delight, traditional through and through and only using the finest of British seasonal ingredients; for instance you may not be surprised to find half a dozen West Mersea native oysters, potted Morecambe Bay shrimps with mace and lemon or dressed Dorset crab with bittercress among the starters. There might also be the thoroughly up to date choice of salted ox tongue with piccalilli, or treacle-cured salmon with pickled fennel and cucumber.
Mains are in a similar vein, with an excellent selection, ranging from Old English sausage with mashed potato and onion gravy, Glen Fyne rib steak naturally, through to fish such as Dover sole. Herb-baked scallops with garlic butter, roast wild duck with a gamekeeper's pie and purple kale, pan-fried Burford Brown egg with baby squid and black pudding, or Lancashire hot-pot with pickled red cabbage broaden the scope to delight all tastes.
To afford security for those who like to look at their lunch plate and know which day of the week it is, a formidable plats du jour regime, served directly from the daily lunch time carving trolley, has been introduced, so if you thought it was Thursday and found yourself being served with roast saddle of lamb, you would have to accept it was in fact Friday. And you would have missed the roast Middle White pork on Thursday.
The wine list has emerged as a real triumph. Further details about this stunning return to the London scene of Brown's Hotel, and in particular the HIX at The Albemarle restaurant, can be obtained from the Website. It should not come as a surprise to learn that they received the Award of 3 Rosettes from the AA in 2009.

Bella Italia is a restaurant that pulsates with Italian style and fashion, where the day starts with breakfast, not least the Inglese, the familiar bacon, sausage, mushroom, tomato and fried or scrambled eggs and sauté potatoes with ciabatta toast so beloved of hearty eaters seeking a good start to the day, particularly when they don't have to prepare it. A vegetarian option is available, along with the bambini of sausages, tomato and scrambled egg, or a strapazzata, scrambled eggs on ciabatta toast. A cappuccino or hot chocolate offers a more gentle awakening and croissant or pastries are welcome at almost any time.
It is always worth remembering that eating Italian is a great opportunity to work away through something rather more liberating than the conventional 3 course English meal. Little and often seems to be the motto but move on to the antipasti and it's immediately obvious this is no easy task, confronted with well over a dozen dishes, not one of which you really have the heart to turn down. The selezione classica assembles a few of the favourite starters; oven baked lemon and rosemary chicken wings, spiced meatballs, calamari, mini garlic butter-filled calzoni and lightly battered courgettes served with flamed pepper and lemon herb dips.
A speck e rucola pizza, added to a traditional margherita brings together two traditions with Italian speck ham providing the second, but it is within the pasta and risotto dishes that you can adapt almost any main ingredient, as well enjoy some of Italy's most traditional treats. Who can deny a well formed spaghetti Bolognese or penne Marco Polo? And not for nothing is a nicely prepared spaghetti carbonara the preferred dish of many.
From a selection of five choices amongst the secondi many will head unerringly for controfiletto ai ferri, a 7oz sirloin steak char-grilled to preference and served with garlic butter, roast field mushrooms, fries and rocket, or the fritto misto, lightly battered prawns, cod fillet, calamari and courgette with fries and a herb lemon and caper dip.
Could anything be more appropriate than The Godfather, for 1 or 2 naturally, with nutty chocolate fudge brownies, vanilla and toffee ice cream with chocolate sauce, fresh cream and wafer curls, and rest assured the coffee will do justice to the meal.
With a wine list that makes few concessions to other countries - and why should it - good Italian food can receive an equally national baptism by wine. For further enlightenment, news about their on-line shop and special deals, a click on their lively Website will reveal all.

When you enter a chain restaurant there is always a sense of déjà vu, yet with the twelve outlets of Giraffe, this may not really be true. Russel and Juliette Joffe and Andrew Jacobs' philosophy behind this group of restaurants is sustaining the driving force of healthy, happy eating, while retaining the difference each location brings. This includes minor variations in the menu too, and explains why the restaurant does not like to be called a chain, but prefers being referred to as a herd. The origin of its quaint name too, is interesting. The giraffe has the largest heart in the animal kingdom, and with its magnificent height is able to perceive things differently. These two features of being different and large hearted sum up the restaurant's proclamation of 'love, eat, live'.
Giraffe offers world food and adds an unusual twist to some familiar dishes. Their breakfast menu has stacked pancakes with bananas and blueberries, warm waffles, ranch styles tostadas and healthy veggie options. Some great starters are a mezze plate with warm naans that offer the best of many cuisines - grilled halloumi, hummus, tzatiki, ratatouille and falafel. Japanese king fried prawns are a hit, while another bright spot on the menu, is the colourful sunshine antipasti bruschetta, a clever combination of artichokes, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, olives, roasted peppers, red onion and rocket on pesto foccacia. If this long list of ingredients is intriguing, just wait until your palate takes over.
The house's special salad, cheekily called 'more than love', is colourful and has crunchy appeal. The Thai chicken and vermicelli noodle version is an equally enticing starter. For mains, there are plenty of options like roasted corn and chilli bran burritos, tangy turkey enchiladas and the much loved sweet potatoes, asparagus, green beans and broccoli served with organic brown basmati rice. One can also settle for a good old burger and wash it down with interesting smoothies. They also offer world wines and unusual cocktails with catchy names like Bombay flower and pomegranate caipirinha.
The dessert section comprises of not just fruit based healthy desserts, but brilliant stars like Swiss mountain chocolate cheesecake, banana waffle split and rocky road ice cream sundaes, which transport the diner to a state of bliss. The friendly staff, who are carefully hired for their sunny disposition, and children's activities help make these restaurants a very special, happy and healthy treat indeed.
