Slug and Lettuce - Stoney Lane
The Courtyard, London, E1 7BH [Map]
Slug and Lettuce has a chain of almost a hundred bars spread across the country sharing a common love of serving down to earth, undemanding food and drink.
The group prides itself on offering dishes prepared using quality ingredients, and you should be attended on by attentive staff in a safe, welcoming and cheerful environment. The Slugs have something for anyone - breakfast for a lively start to the day, lunch for busy people, family meals or even a relaxing glass of wine to bring a tiring day to an end - all in a variety of modern and stylish settings.
The menu features old time English favourites such as Gloucestershire Old Spot sausages in buttered mash or fish pie made with Dartmouth smokehouse haddock, in a Devon cream and leek sauce, although dishes look to Europe and further afield to Asia for inspiration. A good way to start the enjoyment is by sharing platters of Southern fried chicken breast pieces, crispy potato wedges, garlic ciabatta strips, half a rack of BBQ pork ribs, wasabi vegetables with onion rings or some Greek mezze
Hearty steak pies, Thai curry with sticky jasmine rice or butternut squash with goats' cheese lasagne are amongst the more popular main dishes. Sandwiches or wraps - warm tortilla with chicken and Parmesan or aromatic duck in plum sauce - provide for those who prefer something lighter. They also serve burgers as well as tempting salads like salmon, asparagus or tomato and mozzarella. For children they have good old British standby sausage and mash, or pepper pasta and ketchup among other choices, all of which never fail to delight, particularly as some of them seem to have come out of a certain celebrity chef's Book of Forbidden Dishes.
Desserts appear in the form of raspberry biscotti, hot chocolate pudding or a creamy strawberry cheesesake. The wine list is well compiled and substantial. There are not less than seven French, three from Italy and some from Spain, Chile, Australia as well as New Zealand. Slug and Lettuce can cater for events including birthday parties, fashion shows, hen nights, wedding parties or just an enjoyable night out with a few friends.

Royal China - Canary Riverside
30 West Ferry Circus, London, E14 8RR [Map]
There are very few Chinese restaurants that get into the pages of the famed Good Food Guide, but all five branches of Royal China are listed, and with an excellent rating as well.
They have been long renowned for the freshest and best dim sum in London, displaying a delicacy of touch and flavour that sets them apart from those offered elsewhere, however, inconveniently, they are only served at lunchtime.
They both also provide incomparably fine Chinese food at all times, varying from quite normal, mild dishes, to the firiest of Szechuan cooking. Their customers describe them as 'making other Chinese restaurants pale into insignificance', and as quite the most genuine outside of Hong Kong.
You must try to disregard the extremely garish décor, as the whole experience will prove to be surprisingly reasonable on the pocket as well.
It is an especially good place to go with a party of friends, as the Royal China offers a choice of Set Price Menus. Ranging from their House or Vegetarian, up to the Seafood Gourmet at £32, which may sound a lot, but it includes lobster and fantastic imperial seafood hors d'oeuvres. Plus there is no way that you will feel hungry afterwards!
They are also extremely unusual in offering a Vegetarian set meal with delights like Szechuan tofu, and asparagus "Peking style".
12.5 per cent service charge is added to the bills, but you must make sure that the credit card slip is filled in, as they have an infuriating habit of leaving it open.

Plateau Bar & Grill
BookCanada Place, Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London, E14 5ER [Map]
Plateau sits in a prime fourth floor location at the top of Canada Place building opposite Canary Wharf tower. The stylish, futuristic restaurant looks out on awe-inspiring views of the surrounding city landscape. Plateau offers two distinct dining areas and a semi-open view kitchen - a Bar and Grill and a more formal Restaurant each with their own outside terraces. A principal feature of the space is the part glazed ceiling which swathes the space in reflected natural light.
The Bar and Grill offers an informal dining experience and Head Chef Allan Pickett has created dishes such as free range poussin with mustard crust, lemon spinach, green bean salad and veal schnitzel with mash potato, capers and lemon sauce. Old favourites such as Guinness battered day boat fish and chips and lamb burger with cucumber and mint yoghurt also find favour while a separate vegetarian menu is available.
