This is a gloriously different establishment, as the owners have been accumulating a fantastic and extensive collection of Turkish artefacts over the years, which now adorn Iznik, making it quite a stunning sight. This might make you think that the food takes second place, but this is not the case, with a great and really interesting variety, from the normal mezze, through meats like lamb and chicken, in the form of kebabs or grills or stews, through to swordfish and other excellent fish. There are sticky, sweet Turkish pastries, but also some other tempting options on the dessert menu.

British gastropub food is created from local and seasonal produce, and when available, organic. Lunch or dinner can be started with ham hock terrine with toast and pickles or a lovely roast tomato and pepper soup. Among mains, a Parmesan and sage gnocchi appears with baby beets, watercress and water vinaigrette, while guinea fowl is served with potato rösti, green beans and jus.

Expect to find toast, butter and jam; Belgian waffles, crispy bacon and male syrup, and Greek yoghurt, summer berries and honey for brunch at weekends while choices such as anchovies on toast, Welsh rarebit and Spanish tortilla can be had as bar snacks. There's also a full Sunday roast each week.

Desserts could include hot chocolate fondant and a plate of English cheeses. Wines and cocktails ably support the dishes.

Lavender Lady

644 high Road, North Finchley, London, NE12 0NL [Map]

A great place for a reasonably priced meal - Time Out has placed them in the top fifty cheap eats in London - and no compromise on quality either, particularly of the ingredients that they use. For instance, properly hung Orkney rib-eye steak, and organic free range meat from a local butcher; they are justly famed for their fish pie, whilst they also offer award winning Salar hot smoked salmon from Isle of Uist.

They attract a wide mix of customers, from the professional and theatrical crowd to families, while they are considered to be particularly female friendly. They have an attractive garden, open whatever the weather; the restaurant itself could be described as romantic, intimate, calm, and homely. With a mix like that, no wonder that it is so successful.
