Taking a cue from the city's genuine sense of joie de vivre, Old Orleans celebrates the enthusiasm and authentic tastes of the Deep South. Latching on to the Crescent City style theme, the atmosphere across the 14 restaurants in the UK is cheerful and lively with a menu well fuelled by classic Louisiana and Cajun dishes.

Catfish or squid bites, chicken tenders, black and blue mushrooms, and Caesar's salad might be the first things you'll notice, closely followed by a Louisiana sampler of grilled chicken breast skewers, rustic cornbread, potato skins, hot and spicy wings, coconut shrimps, dusted squid and mini pork riblets, plus a BBQ sauce and sour cream dip.

For lovers of cocktails, ice cream and sliders there's a wide spread indeed and cocktail specialties include Hurricane, Serendipity and Screaming Banana Banshee. Little diners at Old Orleans are also well catered for with a special menu designed to suit their allegedly tiny appetites.

Named after Britain's first professional woman painter, The Mary Beale Restaurant at the West Lodge Park Hotel in Cockfosters Road offers guests a pleasant contemporary ambience with a hint of traditional features. Extensively refurbished to a very high standard, many of Mary Beale's original works adorn the walls of the restaurant.

Executive chef Wayne Turner's gastronomic delights on the menu include seared Shetland salmon with mascarpone rilette and crème fraiche, duck and foie gras terrine with red onion marmalade and fillet of Falmouth mackerel with pea purée, for a start. Progress to Seacombe Hill Farm beef fillet with garlic fondant, Denham Estate blade venison, roasted pink, with parsnip and potato purée or Globe artichoke baked with wild mushroom in puff pastry with hollandaise sauce. Desserts of baked plum tart with blackberry bavarois, warm ginger sponge pudding with caramelized pear and Grand Marnier soufflé bring the meal to a fitting end. A range of cheeses such as lord of the hundreds, olde York, Isle of Avalon and Barkham blue give special delight.

Cooking is balanced and well executed and you can expect to find traditional Turkish dishes such as kalamari, marinated squid, deep fried in a batter, with walnut sauce; and arnavut cigeri, sautéed lamb liver with onions, parsley and sumac, to begin with. Moving on, spicy minced lamb, on a bed sliced bread with yogurt and tomato sauce vie with chicken döner kebab to tempt you. Also on the carte are some Turkish pizzas to try your hand on.
