A beautiful traditional pub and restaurant set in the idyllic village of Hayfield, at the foothills of the Kinder Mountain, The Pack Horse offers a warm welcome to its guests. The innovative menu offers something for every palate. Derbyshire reared pork sausages with mash and red onion gravy, grilled fillet of seabass with Spanish style bean stew, and fresh spinach and ricotta risotto are just a few of the crowd pullers.

Sit by the window of the first-floor restaurant and feast on modern British dishes that are created as much as possible from locally sourced ingredients. The à la carte menu yields starters of salmon and crab fishcakes pan-fried in a thyme scented crumb with zesty lemon mayonnaise, or smoked chicken in the company of cherry tomatoes, raspberry vinaigrette, and an olive oil crouton salad.

The imaginative menu is crafted from ingredients that are freshly sourced from local markets while Italian meats are imported to ensure authenticity. Begin with devilled whitebait with aioli, served with garlic mayonnaise and move on to an excellent main course of chicken scarpariello, honey glazed roasted breast meat with pancetta and pine nut stuffing and a rosemary and lemon sauce.

Pastas and pizzas of course are present and offer great value, but the desserts ought not to be missed, particularly the sweet crepes with almonds and hot chocolate sauce. The wine list is suitably Italian, interspersed with a number of options from the New World.

They specialise in good English food made with the very best ingredients, including locally sourced meats, such as deer (venison) from the National Trust at Lyme Park and rare breed beef from Arthur Gee at Longnor, while their range of Harvey Bangers sausages are hand made to their own recipe by Tony Carline at Cromford, south of Matlock.

There is a bar menu available for those that are looking for something less formal and cheaper, though they also offer the fixed price menu at lunchtime, at £14.95 for two courses, most people spend rather less as they either opt for the bar menu or take just one dish from the main carte.

Their fairly traditional mains could include: crispy roast duck with figs; beef in whisky and cream sauce; lamb shank braised in red wine and balsamic vinegar with red onions; pork loin with apple sauce. The homemade puddings embrace such tempting treats as treacle tart, bread and butter pudding and fruit crumble.
