Located in the heart of the eminently rural Shottle estate, itself part of the Chatsworth estate, Shottle Hall offers the opportunity to relax in the true country house atmosphere of a large, comfortable Victorian house where luxury is the yardstick by which all its activities are measured. The surrounding Peak District provides a backcloth of grandeur that impresses without overpowering.

Orangery Restaurant at Shottle Hall has assembled menus that call on the produce and ingredients to be found locally in such abundance, with dishes that are smart without being slick. Look for Derbyshire oxtail and kidney suet pudding, with celeriac purée and Rioja syrup; 'nose to tail' Derbyshire lamb with pea shoots and their purée; spiced monkfish tail with a clam nage; baked egg custard with Garibaldi biscuits, or quince and amaretto trifle.

A wine list of considerable depth, discrete service and impeccable table settings all help to make Shottle Hall a place to treasure and enjoy.

The Orangery Restaurant only opened in 2006, but has established itself well. For private dining the Devonshire dining room offers an intimate setting for special occasions, and for those really wanting to become committed to this home from home membership of the exclusive 1861 Club is an attractive proposition.

The contemporary havens are cut away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life with contemporary interiors incorporating dark wood, leather and mirrors. Each branch has a special style of its own, from being perfect pit stops for lunch, and favourite haunts of students, to places where you could enjoy a latte and watch the world go by.

The menus offers a range of tasty dishes such as starters of piatto grande di antipasto loaded with marinated olives and baby mozzarella, char-grilled chorizo, mixed bruschetta with prosciutto, tomato and basil and dips of hummus and spiced aubergine with garlic and cumin baked flatbread. Signature main courses consist of pan-fried sea bass fillet, slow-roasted confit duck leg, pizza and pasta, and delectable desserts like giant profiteroles.

An idyllic location coupled with its village pub atmosphere, wholesome country cooking and a good selection of hand-pulled ales makes the Red Lion Inn in Church Lane, Litton a local gathering place. Here's where many choose to unwind after a day spent exploring the breathtaking Derbyshire Dales. The pub regrets to say that it cannot accommodate babies below six years of age. Well-behaved dogs, though, are welcome.

Traditional British fare occupies pride of place at the Red Lion. Guests can tuck into old favourites such as steak and kidney pie served with homemade chips, freshly battered fish and chips and sausages, Derbyshire lamb hotpot or slow cooked oxtail casserole. Vegetarian options include wild mushroom pepperpot with basmati rice and salad, goat's cheese and Mediterranean vegetable salad and spicy beanburger. A gluten-free menu is available too. A satisfying repast can conclude with desserts such as apple and blackberry crumble, treacle sponge or sticky rice pudding. The pub offers a good selection of hand-pulled ales, Oakwell Barnsley Bitter, Abbeydale Absolution, Adnams Broadside and more, in addition to wines, malt whiskies and soft drinks.
