Harry's Place enjoys the distinction of being the smallest Michelin-starred restaurant (10 seats), in the pleasant Georgian home of Harry and Caroline Hallam. Harry is in the kitchen, Caroline goes front-of-house. Choice of dishes is limited to around two per course but in the circumstances this is not generally a disadvantage.

Main courses run from £22.50 to £30. Local produce features but the net has been cast much wider and with zeal. Even so, one remembers with affection the roasted Lincolnshire woodcock accompanied by bacon and sage. The wine list is relatively brief and not inexpensive but this does not deter business and you are well advised to book ahead.

Jan Moir, distinguished restaurant critic of the Daily Telegraph, was totally disarmed by Harry's Place, saying "it is quite a thrill to eat in a restaurant with a proper heart and soul, fuelled by such copper-bottomed expertise".

Lincolnshire seems to go for libraries and reading rooms converted into restaurants and tearooms in quite a big way. The one at Alford is best summed up by saying it is just the greatest fun to be there. The cheerful Coral Westall, who with husband Jim, owns and runs the Old Library, was previously a cookery editor, so knows her way around in a place like this.

Tucker on offer is largely traditional, honest fare, using the freshest of ingredients, and you can spend anywhere between £5 and £20 depending on where your fancy takes you. Snacks, light meals, heavier meals, just coffee or tea, all are there to meet your needs.

Old relics will revel in the music from the 1940s. Latest intelligence reports that the books have gone, their place taken by china plates. Perhaps somebody found a few first editions lurking on the shelves.

The excitement of diners at Straits Brasserie in Lincoln is palpable, because it seems to be a real find whether you look at it in terms of the food or even the ambience. Formerly known as Viela, this restaurant brings two unlikely cuisines together, Brazilian and modern British, and it is this sense of novelty that embellishes the enjoyment of the customers. Friendly service and a laidback atmosphere also contribute to the satisfaction levels considerably.

All the dishes are prepared using only fresh locally produced and sourced ingredients and might feature a traditional Lincolnshire stuffed chine with homemade piccalilli while the Brazilian side emerges with the exotic xin xim, chicken and king prawns cooked in cashew and peanut sauce. This award winning restaurant also offers a feasting menu where you can enjoy from a selection of hot and cold starters including bread and olives followed by a main course where you can choose from five spit roasted meats carved at your table. Straits is perfect for celebrations, big or small.
