The Kettering Park Hotel and Spa has been awarded four AA stars, which shine through brilliantly in each of their services; from the warm welcome each visitor receives, and the small yet thoughtful touches in the well-appointed contemporary bedrooms, to the great British cuisine served at Langberrys Restaurant, Bar and Lounge.

Diners can expect to taste the very best of Northamptonshire at Langberrys, an inviting dining venue that offers a great ambience to enjoy a five-course gourmet wine dinner, or just an informal lunchtime gathering with friends.

Head Chef Stephen Robinson works with favoured local suppliers to offer a seasonal menu that varies each day. A plate of Bleikers oak-smoked Scottish salmon with horseradish cream and lemon gets the meal off to a great start. Interesting main courses include honey-glazed breast of duck with Asian greens, onion fritter, and oyster mushrooms, and half-poached English lobster with a Cromer crab salad.

Langberrys is open all day until late and the bar is another destination to enjoy fantastic wines, continental lagers, and their very own beer, Thwaites Lancaster Bomber.

Restaurant at The White Swan

Seaton Road, Harringworth, Corby, NN17 3AF [Map]

Harringworth's main claim to fame is possibly that it nestles at the foot of the Seaton Viaduct, a truly magnificent piece of red-brick construction that spans the Welland Valley, across which every so often a well-publicised steam train trundles, causing steam-buffs from across the country to descend in great numbers. On such occasions the White Swan tends to be drunk dry pretty sharpish. For the rest of the time people come to stay there, and more importantly enjoy the excellent food prepared by Paul Brennan and his team.

The overall impression is of an ever so mildly Bohemian (must be the red walls) dining room with bar alongside, full of locals and travellers happily consorting, the walls lined with fading reminders of surrounding WW2 American Air bases.

A large specials board over the fireplace changes regularly. A likely starter could be the sauté of wild English mushrooms with Madeira, cream and truffle and toasted sun-dried bread, followed by crisped duck breast, pommes fondant, creamed leeks, roast honey and lime parsnips and juniper jus. Service is homely and efficient

The bar does a good line in guest beers with the likes of Timothy Taylor's Landlord making regular appearances. The wine list has romped around the world to good effect.

A contemporary country pub and hotel called The Red Lion can be found in the small village of East Haddon, in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside. Being the only pub in the village, it is loved by the locals and visitors for its warm atmosphere, excellent food, and comfortable accommodation.

The exciting menu focuses on quality, and fresh locally sourced produce is used to create a range of English and international dishes. You could start your day with their smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, or enjoy a plate of glazed goats' cheese with olive tapenade and roasted red peppers followed by sea bass fillets with a soy and ginger sauce, sautéed potatoes and green beans, or the fourteen-day aged rump of beef, from the à la carte or bar menu.

Five cosy and ensuite bedrooms promise a good night's rest to weary travellers. And if you wish to spend your day in style there is a two bedroom cottage with private dining facilities and a separate lounge.

Jodhpur Palace

73 Harborough Road, Kingthorpe, Northampton, NN2 7SL [Map]

Named after a historic tourist destination in India, well-known for its bright, sunny weather all year round, Jodhpur Palace on Harborough Road embodies the vibrancy of this town, through its contemporary design elements offset by some conventional notes. Paintings of Indian instruments, kings and women with water pots are a reflection of the varied cultures in India.

The cooking is also characterised by its diversity and the sophisticated and subtle use of spices, like the chicken tawa, which imbues the flavours of crushed mustard seeds, dried red chillies, ginger, bay leaves, cardamom pods and fresh coriander. Likewise the lamb nihari simmered in onion gravy owes its intense taste to whole fine ground spices, and those who are fiercely loyal to traditional dishes could choose a kurma, vindaloo, Madras or dansak.

Indian food is often seen as tricky to pair with wine, but the drinks list at Jodhpur Palace restores faith and has been carefully designed to be cosy with the spice.
