An idyllic setting in an old village railway station paired with consistently excellent modern British cooking make this a popular venue for Nottingham locals and beyond. Warm and genuine service keeps a loyal base of customers coming back week after week.

Started in 1982 by Tony and Wendy Perkins the place has prospered, which speaks for itself; over the intervening period, Perkins has gained a reputation for food and service excellence, supported by all the top guides. In fact Perkins has been voted the Midlands restaurant of the year by the readers of the Which? Good Food Guide for 2007 and 2008.

There is a small bar where orders are taken from the blackboard menu which offers a surprisingly sophisticated range. They do a speedy two-course lunch, with two choices per course, shall we say salt beef hash topped with fried egg and capers or fillet of home-smoked salmon with creamed leeks and sauté potatoes? The mid-week fixed-price dinner is well-priced. Perkins now boasts their own smokehouse, dishes from which appear regularly on the menu, and really epitomise what Perkins is about - good, solid local ingredients, well executed.

House wines come in at £13.95 and similarly comfortably-priced wines from a short list are also on offer. Would that the country had more of these simple, unpretentious, but thoroughly good places where ordinary people can eat well and reasonably often.

Hard by the walls of Newark Castle where King John breathed his last is this brilliant contribution towards the life of Newark. The setting is Bohemian smart with large colourful canvasses to catch the eye and most nights an informal programme of music from a wide range. By day the Café Bleu is a brasserie but as the shadows lengthen it adopts a more formal pose and the menu changes with the mood. In general the cooking is innovative contemporary with influence from the Mediterranean.and Europe. A suitably eclectic wine list is nothing less than you'd expect.

Overlooking the cottage garden in a conservation village setting, Garden cafe is an oak framed extension to the Colston Bassett Store. Although a cafe by name, it is a restaurant by nature serving freshly prepared food. The venue offers friendly surroundings in which guests can enjoy a morning coffee, a mid-day meal or an intimate dinner in the evenings and makes for a great place to meet family or friends combined with some shopping at the store.

Some delectable dishes that feature regularly on the seasonally changing menu include Thai butternut soup with lime and coriander, potted shrimps served with wholemeal toast for light bites. For more filling options you could order pasta bake with smoked salmon, leeks and a white wine garlic and cream sauce, or deep filled quiche with free range bacon and mature cheddar cheese.

The extensive range of wines on offer complements the cuisine.
