The Ormond at Tetbury
23 Long Street, Tetbury, GL8 8AA [Map]
Those who have been to Cirencester Farmers' market and Jesse Smith Butcher's at Tetbury will probably be enticed by the selection of cheeses, fresh herbs, top quality meats and dairy produce. If you can't wait till you return home with bagfuls of these goodies and cook a meal, then step in to The Ormond, which shares the philosophy of the market by using high quality produce. There are some products, such as chorizo or Parmigiano-Reggiano made in-house, so they believe in balance.
The food is gutsy, flavoursome and creative whilst still doing the classics perfectly. So expect crispy duck and bacon salad with homemade plum sauce, cider roasted local Gloucester old spot pork belly with parsley mash and braising jus, and caramelised lime tart with raspberry sorbet and a selection of local artisan cheeses.
You can eat either in their stylishly comfortable restaurant, refurbished bar, or the garden, which is a wonderful oasis in the summer.

Restaurant at The Gumstool Inn
Calcot Manor Hotel, nr Tetbury, GL8 8YJ [Map]
The beautiful Calcot Manor Hotel was formerly an English farmhouse situated around a pretty courtyard of lime trees, ancient stone barns and stables, and two hundred and twenty acres of meadowland. Today it is counted among Britain's finest country hotels, and renowned for its dining facilities, spa, and accommodation.
While The Conservatory Restaurant offers a wonderful formal atmosphere to dine in, The Gumstool Inn is more relaxed, with a regular and devoted clientele from Gloucestershire and further afield. It is served by the same superb kitchen as The Conservatory, and is a previous winner of the Good Pub Guide's 'Dining Pub of the Year' award.
Expect to find dishes such as a seared scallop salad with avocado and crispy pancetta; Asian duck salad with a sweet and sour dressing, and free-range British chicken spit-roasted with lemon, thyme and roasted carrots and leeks.
A great choice of ales and wines provides added pleasure.

Restaurant at The Close Hotel
Long Street, Tetbury, GL8 8AQ [Map]
Located in the heart of the well preserved and even better connected town of Tetbury, Close Hotel is the archetype ruris in urbe with the best of both. An attractive garden offers opportunity for a sharpener in the cool of a summer's evening or a post-prandial stroll before the nightcap. The food is real quality and extraordinarily good value and seafood is a strength. The menu is not large but really does not have to be. A starter of cauliflower and truffle cappuccino sets the tone before going on to grilled Brixham brill with a haricot bean and shellfish casserole and chorizo mash. Those with any inkling of real enthusiasm for cheese will find plenty to enthuse about, but for others the traditional warm sticky toffee pudding with butter scotch sauce accompanied by an intense chocolate and cardamom ice cream will take some resisting. Service and accoutrements are of the same high order.

The Priory Inn
London Road, Tetbury, GL8 8JJ [Map]
Their tagline proclaims 'eating, drinking and sleeping' and while it might only tell you what The Priory Inn is all about, it doesn't do justice to how well they take care of all these activities. This delightfully atmospheric inn with its fourteen beautifully furnished rooms, huge walk-around fireplace and backdrop of the Cotswolds is a wonderful place for a vacation and has a charming child-friendly restaurant which serves a wide range of dishes featuring locally sourced produce, meat and fish.
From amongst the starters, you could choose the pan fried pigeon breast with parsnip puree and pancetta followed by a main course of pork tenderloin saltimbocca with sautéed Nicola potatoes, broccoli and port cream. Wood oven pizzas and freshly baked garlic bread are enticing options while the rich and decadent desserts include an upside down spiced pear tart with vanilla ice cream. The wonderful selection of wines, real ales from local breweries and chilled bottled beer accompany the food perfectly.

Conservatory Restaurant
Calcot Manor, nr Tetbury, GL8 8YJ [Map]
Calcot Manor has an excellent reputation as one of the most attractive English country house hotels - but not at all grand as it is actually a converted farmhouse - it manages to combine the right balance between formality and friendliness, and many praise the responsiveness of the staff, fortunately there is also excellent food in the restaurant to match to quality elsewhere.
The main dining area is the Conservatory restaurant and a dinner could begin with: Cornish fish soup with tomato, flat parsley and garlic croutons; char grilled Mediterranean vegetable salad with slow baked tomatoes, rocket and ciabatta croutons; Thai spiced crab cakes with soy, lemon and coriander dipping sauce or a salad of griddled scallops with char grilled asparagus, and crispy pancetta.
Then for main course: pan-fried calf's liver with sage, caramelised sweet onion and polenta mash; roast rack of Cotswold lamb with a garlic and parsley crust; venison steak 'au poivre' with spinach and bacon spatzele or grilled marinated fillet mignon of yellow fin tuna with Moroccan vegetables and cous cous. Finish with pannacotta and fresh strawberries; caramelised fig tart tatin with mascarpone and honey or warm chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream.

The Chef's Table
49 Long Street, Tetbury, GL8 8AA [Map]
Housed in a former antiques shop, The Chef's Table, a bistro with a food shop over two floors offers a unique dining experience to anyone who appreciates simple, good food. It is owned and run by Sarah and Michael Bedford formerly of the Trouble House in Tetbury. The venue specializes in seasonal, fresh and locally produced food.
Michael's passion for rustic, French dishes is reflected in the daily lunch menu. Typical lunch dishes include wild mushroom risotto; creamy moules mariniere, and aromatic apples and pears poached in a reduction of red wine, cloves, cinnamon and cardamom.
The deli on the ground floor offers a fresh fish and shellfish counter with every day deliveries from Cornwall of whole crabs, mussels, Pollock, and organic salmon to name but a few. A selection of dishes such as cassoulet, braised oxtail and rabbit tarragon pie are also available for guests to take home and enjoy.
