Cafe Saffron is a one-off , with no other commitments in Shrewsbury than to produce the best in their 110 seater warmly decorated, fully air conditioned restaurant, where ample parking, attentive staff and an imaginative menu make this an essential entry for your little red book.

A choice of around 20 starters establishes two things, the quality of the food and the incredible value for money. Machli rang, onion bhaji and prawn on puri, or black peppercorn chicken make a great beginning before heading for a fine butter murghi with diced marinated chicken shallow fried in butter then added to a creamy coconut sauce. All principal dishes are annotated for heat, as in strength, assessments that are not to be taken lightly. Watch out for the naga murchi, chicken or lamb cooked with extremely hot chillies and unique to the northern regions of Bangladesh which rates 5, at the top of the scale, two above the challenging vindaloo.

More than a few regular Indian food eaters tend to be creatures of habit, which at Cafe Saffron means a good personal kick is needed to move into the lesser known dishes. Trouble is the old favourites are well trailed and familiarity can win. Expect to find rogan josh, classic madras, pathia, phall and the ever popular balti, with choices of chicken or lamb, tiger prawns, chicken or lamb tikka, and mixed vegetable. Amongst the lesser known seafood dishes salmon spice, Bengal pagush, and telaphia all await your pleasure.

Tandoori grills are invariably popular, served here with dips and fresh, crisp salad. The selection of vegetables, side dishes, rice, naan bread and other accompaniments is truly awesome and well in tune with the other dishes

Getting down to the more serious side of the table keep an eye open for the seafood pie, a delightful assembly of things fishy including crayfish, red snapper, prawns and clams. Many of their steaks are 28 days matured, including a 7oz fillet. All steaks are served with watercress, roasted cherry tomatoes, a flat mushroom and chunky chips. A choice from 4 sauces adds the final touch of enjoyment.

Pastas and salads embrace some well known and loved names, but for sheer enjoyment the hot smoked salmon salad takes some beating - flakes of hot smoked salmon mixed with a house salad and soy and ginger sauce. A real winner.

Snacks aplenty cover hot baguettes with the like of grilled pork loin and Bramley apple sauce, sandwiches filled with Cheddar cheese, or prawns and Marie Rose sauce, and jacket potatoes with such temptations as chilli con carne. Add a bowl of chips for only a little extra.

A six course evening menu presents diners with a choice of slightly smaller meat, fish and vegetarian dishes that can be interchanged to cater for most people's tastes. For some time I made the mistake of thinking that no group of restaurants in the region of 200 locations could hope to maintain the quality for which I was looking.

Then one day I decided to put my prejudices to the test, walked into Oxford Ask! and discovered that I could not have been more mistaken. Their claim to serve freshly prepared quality food in stylish and comfortable surroundings with friendly and efficient service proved to be absolutely spot on.

Since then I have also discovered that a degree of consistency seems to operate throughout their restaurants, and that certainly does take some achieving, implying a degree of management that is enviable. They are perfect places for an impromptu snack, a bit of culinary grazing, or the full works, and families are catered for particularly well.

Their trendy décor usually comprises tiled floors and black furniture with well set tables that sparkle with glass, silver and spotless linen. Ten starters include crostini and bruschetta, followed by a range of salads, pasta and al forno, oven baked pasta, some with chicken.

The pizzas are stone baked in the oven, creating a crisp, authentic and delicious flavour, and they all come topped with mozzarella and tomato. Calzone introduce a touch of opulence with a folded pizza baked in the oven and topped with garlic butter and melted grana padano, whilst inside expect to find chicken or a vegetarian mix.

Amongst the specials may I warmly, in every sense, recommend the polpette al forno, a popular Milanese dish of beef meatballs sautéed in garlic with fire roasted peppers, caramelised onions, chilli and pomodoro sauce, with penne pasta, topped with cheese and oven baked.

An enticing selection of desserts list banoffee pie and tiramisu amongst them, and the coffee tastes like coffee, which may sound banal, but I guess you know what I mean.

Thanks to a well selected wine list speculative drinking can offer handsome dividends, even with prices rarely crossing the £20 barrier.

Whilst the 42 Loch Fyne restaurants have a shared background there is a welcome degree of individuality encouraged throughout the group, which makes for customer interest. If you like wholesome, fresh and reliable seafood caught and reared under carefully controlled conditions, well presented in unfussy surroundings, and you enjoy being well looked after by pleasant staff, Loch Fyne is for you.

There is an increasing awareness of other food staples with an extended choice of meat dishes, but it is the original fare upon which their success was created that prevails. Loch Fyne kippers, a fine bouillabaisse, braden rost, kiln-roasted salmon fillet, and the toothsome oysters on ice, with a selection of accompaniments, all are to be found throughout the various restaurants, as well as Glen Fyne 21 day aged rib-eye steak and Scottish smoked venison. There is invariably a well-travelled wine list available which is sensible, both in content and prices.

Loch Fyne's greatest achievement has been to prove to a sceptical populace that chains or conglomerates can be made to work in the eating-out public's best interests.

The only intimidating thing  about The Armoury is its name. For once you pass the massive red brick exterior and step in, you'll be welcomed by the lovely laidback atmosphere of a country pub and long runs of huge arched windows that illuminate the interior and offer views across the broad River Severn.

In 1995, the armoury building was renovated into an impressive pub with such charming features as an open plan interior with bare brick walls, a display of floor-to-ceiling books, a stone fireplace, stripped wooden floors and mixed wood tables and chairs.

The bar offers a fantastic choice of drinks that include eight real ales, great wines, around fifty malt whiskies, spirits and rare liqueurs.

And when it comes to the food, get set to feast on well-created pub dishes from a daily changing menu of soups, sandwiches, light bites of, say, Welsh rarebit with poached egg on toasted white bread or grilled sea bass fillet with a rocket, fennel and orange salad, and mains of braised shoulder of lamb with roast new potatoes and vegetables, or teriyaki chicken, pak-choi, oyster mushrooms and sesame broccoli.
