A starter of locally sourced rabbit is served with red and yellow sweet pepper and a salad of sheznu cress and garden herbs with beetroot dressing. Feast on a porcine trilogy of pig's cheek and spring onion parcel, confit of belly pork, sage rubbed pork chop, poached baby fennel and apple and nutmeg compote. Those looking for a plain grilled main course could choose from the 'La Placha' menu of char-grilled sword fish steak or pan-fried calves' liver.

Unobtrusive from the outside, faded traditional on the inside, Bosquet gets to the heart of the matter when it comes to the classical French cooking. A few modern gestures there may be, but in the main it is the well-tried and much-loved dishes that make their appearance and earn Bosquet a reputation which brings people back time and again. In deference to middle-England there is a daily fish special.

The Ripple Café serves traditional favourites such as spring rolls, lemon chicken, beef in oyster sauce, sweet and sour dishes, chop suey and chow mein, all with a twist. Consider spring rolls in a delicate filo pastry or aromatic duck with pancakes for a start. Mains could include mussels in their shells, stir fried noodles or demae ramein mixed with chicken, prawns and pork and marinated salmon fillet.

The White Bear dominates the market square, presenting a traditional old English appearance to passers by, of whom there are many.

The restaurant has recently been refurbished and now looks very smart, offering a menu that treads no daring paths but produces mainly comfort dishes, with which I have absolutely no quarrel, always provided they are cooked well.

Starters of pan-fried lamb's kidneys compete amongst the starters with char-grilled king prawns, and a very attractive chicken liver and sage pate with spicy onion chutney, served with side salad and toast.

Amongst the mains expect to find Gloucester Old Spot pork chop with an apple and cider sauce, char-grilled rib-eye steak with a peppercorn and brandy sauce, or smoked haddock and prawn pancakes in a cheesy sauce.
