The Pepperpot Brasserie at The White Lion Hotel

21 High Street, Upton-upon-Severn, WR8 0HJ [Map]

Behind the Georgian façade lurks a 16th century inn, much of the character of which has survived. The Pepperpot Brasserie with its oak beams makes a good setting for the contemporary menu. The avocado pear with flaked crab, shrimps and smoked salmon comes with a light grain mustard dressing. For those of a certain disposition the swordfish steak with a creamy curry sauce and fried bananas holds an awful lot of appeal.

To finish, well for me there's a choice between a good old-fashioned Knickerbocker Glory and the warm chocolate nut brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce. No points at all for not offering a savoury but I do realise this is a largely personal eccentricity. Small but good wine list with four house wines from £11.95.

Restaurant at Holdfast Cottage

Marlbank Road, Little Malvern, Malvern, nr Upton-upon-Severn, WR13 6NA [Map]

A superbly located little paradise, redolent of antiquity, peace and good taste with outrageously beautiful views to the Malverns. The 26 seater restaurant serves meals that give a new meaning to the word comfort and you could start with the delicate pumpkin and almond soup before going on to the fillet of cod with a brioche crust, served with a creamy leek sauce. To finish with anything other than the chocolate heaven torte would be an act likely to leave you permanently marked with regret, however tempted you might have been by the rhubarb and fig crumble. A great little wine list with house wine at £11.25.
