Siam Smile
27 College Street, Worcester, WR1 2LS [Map]
A comfortable not too large restaurant just round the corner from the east end of the Cathedral without one of those suspiciously large menus that inspire wonder but hardly confidence. A good range of dishes embraces vegetarian and fish, including pal churches, deep-fried whole tilapia, de-boned and skinless, and topped with curry sauce. The roam tale, steamed mixed seafood with fresh Thai herbs caught my eye, and when I asked for a green seafood curry, though not on the menu it was supplied with little delay.
The customary 'package' meals are available with the Chaowpraya River weighing in at £23.95 a head and offering sufficient nourishment to keep anyone with a reasonable appetite going for several days, and even the more modest River Kwan, at £15.95 offers both quality and value. There is also an efficient takeaway service.

Spring Restaurant at The Mount Pleasant Hotel
Mountpleasant Hotel, 50 Belle Vue Terrace, Great Malvern, WR14 4PZ [Map]
The Spring Restaurant and Bar at The Mount Pleasant Hotel in Belle Vue Terrace serves quality modern European cuisine. The family-run hotel is in an attractive Georgian building with beautiful views of the Malvern Priory and eastwards over the Vale of Evesham towards the Cotswolds. Whilst the restaurant's solid wood tables give it a slightly rustic touch, overall it has a modern feel.
Having worked up an appetite in the countryside, you can look forward to starting dinner with dishes like field mushrooms filled with Welsh rarebit, smoked salmon and prawns and pan seared duck salad. Take the meal forward with roasted vegetable mille foie, pan fried sea bass fillet, rump steak with garlic and herb butter and Gressingham duck breast with baby potatoes and seasonal vegetables. For lunch, there's choice of lamb's liver and bacon with mustard mash potatoes, homemade chicken curry with basmati rice, vegetable moussaka and homemade beef lasagna. The dessert selection offers banoffee pie, strawberry cheesecake and crème brûlée with a fruit compote.

Restaurant at The Southcrest Manor Hotel
Pool Bank, Southcrest, Redditch, B97 4JS [Map]
Part of the original house, the restaurant operates within a manor house style hotel, which offers views of the gardens and grounds. A wide variety of modern and traditional dishes are available from the daily table d'hote or a la carte menus. Children are well catered for, as are any special dietary requirements. Open daily for lunch and dinner.

The Mug House
Claines Lane, claines, Worcester, WR3 7RN [Map]
A very traditional English pub, one of only two known that are located in churchyards. This, as you may imagine, leads to sometimes slightly unseemly comment regarding the neighbours, over 15,000 of them laid to rest over the centuries but nobody minds for the place is a haven to good honest fun and companionship.
It is said that there is a pact, whereby the vicar keeps the pub full and the publican obliges by filling the church pews, which seems an eminently sensible way of keeping everybody happy, particularly as some of Banks's finest brews are to be found in the pub cellar.
The cuisine is simple and greatly enjoyed - if you want to eat especially well ask for Judy's ham, egg and chips.

Ashleys Restaurant
11 The Tything, Worcester, WR1 1HD [Map]
The presence of almost a dozen Indian restaurants in a mile's stretch is enough proof of the cuisine's popularity in Worcester. Ashleys is a small yet impeccably spotless and modish place in The Tything, a street considered to be a paradise for those in search of refreshment in the city. Its décor painted with hues of black and white lends a modern feel whilst successfully retaining the character of the 16th century listed building.
The menu is designed with a host of traditional and contemporary dishes and you could begin with sharing a platter of four different starters or seek the salmon la jawab, salmon marinated in yoghurt and spices. The 'green lamb' curry, possibly one of Ashleys most talked about Indian dishes, is definitely worth a try. Another delectable combination is the chicken balti coupled with egg fried rice.
If you are amongst those who like to wrap up a meal with a sweet, an array of attractive desserts is on hand.
