With a light, contemporary feel and exquisite food the Chennai Indian Cuisine is the perfect place to enjoy a family meal, a celebration or a romantic meal for two. The restaurant is an oasis of fine food from the sub continent set in the rural Worcestershire countryside. Having an idyllic location has allowed the venue to develop its own image and atmosphere. It is far removed from the normal stereotypical image and has developed a loyal following of regular customers who appreciate the fine food and friendship.

Onion bhaji and prawn on puree jostle for attention amidst a more modern list of tempting starters such as crab tikkas and Bangladeshi rolls. For a filling meal guests can try a blazing curry consisting of marinated tandoori chicken, diced lamb, chicken, king prawn and egg, garnished with fresh cream and nuts with traditional breads before moving on to keema pulau rice.

The Michelin listed country pub and restaurant serves classic dishes created from locally sourced ingredients, some grown in their own backyard. In fine weather, diners can sit in the garden, where summer barbeques are a feature  at weekends.

Choices at the restaurant might include terrine of local game with rocket and ruby chard salad, and braised brisket of Herefordshire beef with pan-fried feather steak. Fresh fish from the daily chalkboard augments the list of options.

A selection of lunchtime sandwiches as well as dishes such as Thai style fishcakes or wild boar and apple sausages are served at the bar. There are wines and spirits as well as George's Best and Fullers London Pride beers on the hand pumps.

There is always a happy atmosphere about the place and the food, which comes from a menu that changes frequently, is lively, fresh and appetising. This is a good port of call for supper pre city-centre event, a tasty lunch or post dreary-meeting revival course.

The Pepperpot Brasserie at The White Lion Hotel

21 High Street, Upton-upon-Severn, WR8 0HJ [Map]

Behind the Georgian façade lurks a 16th century inn, much of the character of which has survived. The Pepperpot Brasserie with its oak beams makes a good setting for the contemporary menu. The avocado pear with flaked crab, shrimps and smoked salmon comes with a light grain mustard dressing. Learn more

The avocado pear with flaked crab, shrimps and smoked salmon comes with a light grain mustard dressing. For those of a certain disposition the swordfish steak with a creamy curry sauce and fried bananas holds an awful lot of appeal.

To finish, well for me there's a choice between a good old-fashioned Knickerbocker Glory and the warm chocolate nut brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce. No points at all for not offering a savoury but I do realise this is a largely personal eccentricity. Small but good wine list with four house wines from £11.95.
