16 Mother's Day Results

mother's dayWhilst we might not always see eye to eye with Mum, there is an important calendar date that should be noted - Mum's generally can get more than a little agitated should their special date be forgotten.

Heaven forbid!

As far as we can tell the most popular way of spoiling Mother is still treating her to a nice meal. Sorry, sending a card (even if it arrives on time) isn't counted as a spoil.

I suppose they know what they are doing but it continues to puzzle me why the large hotel chains sometimes do not do more to promote their eating facilities, particularly when they are as good as those offered by the Holiday Inn, Glasgow. Featured as La Bonne Auberge the restaurant takes a brasserie attitude with a pronounced French/Mediterranean inclination. The influx of non-hotel guests makes for a high buzz factor, with the customary lunch and pre-theatre meal deals showing up well.

After nine years of operation, the restaurant remains one of the favourite eateries in the city. It places a strong emphasis on service, and provides an ever evolving menu. Their steaks are notable, and such dishes as venison with pea puree and Cajun spiced salmon fillet sit comfortably with more traditional fare.

On the first floor of the Design Museum, the Blueprint Cafe was the first restaurant in the Butlers Wharf Gastrodrome. It has stunning views from the City of London along the Thames to Canary Wharf. The floor to ceiling windows and light wooden floors create a light and airy space in which to enjoy Jeremy Lee's fantastic cooking and the knowledgeable and courteous service.

Events, weddings, conferences and other such functions can be held in this relaxed riverside venue and when the weather is good, the glass doors can be opened to create a stylish al fresco mood. A large rooftop summer terrace provides spectacular views and can be hired for canapé and barbeque receptions while they also cater for events held in the Design Museum where they are located.

Head Chef Jeremy Lee is renowned for his eclectic style of cooking - taking influences from his native Scotland as well as Europe and North Africa. His menu changes daily depending on what is good that's in season.

The food scene is well set by his starters, offering a positive rainbow of choices, at one of the spectrum a chilled nettle soup; at the other smoked haddock fishcakes with aioli or jellied pork terrine, pickles and toast and in between, razor clams with parsley crust.

Follow that Jeremy! Fortunately he does that very successfully with piscatorial delights like rabbit and chicken pie or baked pork, asparagus, peas and broad beans while there is general applause for his whole lemon sole, garlic and parsley butter.

He is equally accomplished with his desserts, which might feature a traditional, but not the way he does it, blood orange sorbet, and, in the pastry department, pistachio cake with poached pear and cold vanilla cream, or almond tart with caramelized apples and Jersey cream.

The set menu is one of the indulgences that no one wants to miss, particularly when tempted by dishes such as duck and chicken liver pâté with pickles and toast, or a more substantial baked marinated chicken with tomato and courgette tian. The day becomes more enjoyable when lunch is brought to an end by a red currant sorbet or lemon posset and berries.

The Blueprint Café brings an elegant mix of European wines and New World discoveries with quite a few choices available by the glass. There is plenty of information on their comprehensive Website, such as offers and seasonal menu changes.
