Sandinista
5-5a, Cross Belgrave Street, Leeds, LS2 8JP [Map]
Sandinista's opening was inspired by its founder Si Ord's love for music, food and drink and the Central American culture. The décor amply exemplifies this thought process with an undeniable Latin American feel and the appeal almost bordering on shabby, but the idea is to create a place which resonates with their ethos - our home is your home.
From the tapas menu jerk chicken with pineapple salsa, Spanish smoked paprika sausage, salt cod fritters with spicy coleslaw and nachos may impress. The express lunch menu takes in breaded jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese, crispy bacon and avocado sandwich, and roast beef with horseradish mayonnaise and leaf salad on a pumpkin seed granary roll.
The bar's revolutionary theme is motivated by a political movement in Nicaragua from the 80's and with music gigs happening every Wednesday and Sunday; Sandinista is one among the most sought-after places for a night out in Leeds.

Bryan's
9 Weetwood Lane, Leeds, LS16 5LT [Map]
I once devoted quite a deal of time and effort into convincing one of our leading heritage bodies, for whom I worked at the time, into believing that it was not so much a matter of the food you offered to your visitors but the way in which you presented it. Fish and chips was one of our success stories, possibly because it was considered to be part of the British heritage anyway.
But not so much a part as it is at Bryan's in Leeds, where since 1934 they have been busy turning out this great dish for the delectation of the population, and right under Harry Ramsden's nose too.
In recent times Bryan's has moved upmarket, mainly under the guidance of Jan Fletcher, ably supported by Head Chef Darren Toft. "Head Chef", I hear you ask, "it's a chippie". Well yes, but it's also a good deal more, and frankly if I had to choose between eating a meal there or at an over-rated and mismanaged restaurant elsewhere, I know where my money would be.
Bryan's has a menu that covers almost every manifestation of seafood from starters, through salads, fish and chips, and desserts to what is described as "something not so fishy", which turns out to be a choice of beef or vegetable lasagne, or a beefburger of good parentage. And they have a licence.
"A Yorkshire institution where traditional food heritage meets contemporary chic" says their website. Could not put it better myself. Go along soon for your swordfish steak, smoked haddock Florentine, delicious seafood pie or Bryan's regular haddock - with chips, of course.

Nash's Fish and Chips
17 Merrion Street, Leeds, LS2 8JE [Map]
Grandma Nash opened her first shop on Park Lane in Leeds in the 1920's. Word got around about this top-notch chip shop and, before long, enormous queues were a regular fixture. It took 40 years and a third generation before the Nash's branched out.
The haddock and cod used here is hook and line caught using sustainable sources. Melon and pink grapefruit cocktail, giant warm water shrimps, traditional chimney smoked haddock and potato, wholetail premium scampi are some exciting offers on the menu. Or you might want to try slow cooked tender pieces of Yorkshire beef steak and pie, chips and mushy peas. You could also sit down to a classic plate of fish and chips with a big pot of tea and some bread and butter to the side; you would be forgiven for thinking you had gone back in time.

Dine at The Mansion
Mansion Lane, Leeds, LS8 2HH [Map]
The Mansion in Leeds is a name that speaks of sophistication and refinement; this Grade II listed classical building also commands splendid views over 700 acres of parkland, a tree-lined drive, sweeping staircase and plenty of charming features inside. It's particularly well-suited to form a perfect backdrop for business meetings, celebration dinners and elegant wedding ceremonies.
The team behind the Garden Room Café at The Mansion understand the importance of sourcing local ingredients and the menu is based on what the suppliers deliver at their doorstep, so it could be a hazelnut crusted 'Lowna Dairy' goats' cheese or a platter of Yorkshire cured meats, marinated queen olives, sun blushed tomatoes, baby mozzarella, rocket and Parmesan salad. Few can resist the allure of rosemary studded lamb or sea bream with herb rösti, prawns and brown butter.
There is a range of menus available at the Garden Room Café, from lighter snacks during the day to formal dining in the evenings.

Salute at The White Swan
Church Street, Rothwell, Leeds, LS26 0QL [Map]
A vibrant, friendly restaurant, with a welcoming team and great Italian style quality food, with all the cherished favourites and many new tasty treats. Salute is near enough to the centre of Leeds to make the short journey seem a break between the city bustle and more peaceful environment.
The word humungous (not listed in my dictionary) is a modern hybrid that induces a vision of vast-ness. It could very well be applied to the menu at Salute, in which case this summary would run out of space. So an abbreviated version is offered in the confident hope that it will paint a picture of what awaits the eager diner.
Start with a homemade chicken liver parfait, with apricot chutney, or King prawns in filo pastry served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. For vegetarians button mushrooms come in a creamy garlic sauce, or there is the homemade soup of the day. For a modest extra £2 an 8oz sirloin steak can be ordered, with grilled tomato, field mushrooms and fries, which seems like incredibly good value.
Moving on we find a pizza margarita, the classic cheese and tomato. Also in the pizza stable, a triple salami, with pepperoni, salami milano, garlic sausage and jalapenos. the eponymous Salute pizza, with rocket, parmesan and garlic. In a country as well travelled as Italy it would hardly be surprising to find a pizza internazionale, and sure enough there it is, with ham, mushrooms, peppers, seafood and pepperoni. Carnavale Olam I thought first must be Salute's take on that old favourite, Coronation chicken, but no, it's chicken with meatballs, double cheese and garlic butter, and it is better than the royal variety.
Pasta opens up with the classic Italian lasagne, made socially acceptable in the '80s by Margaret Thatcher, and a macaroni al forno of baked ham, more meatballs, a napolitana sauce with cheese. Another old favourite is the four cheese ravioli with tomato and basil sauce, and no Italian menu could possibly be complete without spaghetti meatballs in a lusty tomato and basil sauce.
A touch of grace is lent by the tagliatelle pollo, a tasty compilation of chicken fillets and mushrooms with white wine and cream.
Desserts feature a baked vanilla cheesecake, the ubiquitous sticky toffee pudding, not so far from its home in Cartmel, and Beckleberry's wonderful hand made ice cream, including vanilla pod, maple and walnut, mocha and chocolate, and the gloriously indulgent chocolate fudge chunk.
By the way, the children have their own menu, which I think Jamie Oliver would sort of approve of, the most Italian item of which is penne pasta Napoli.
The wine list hosts a good selection of Italian wines, but unlike some Italian restaurants is generous in the homage it pays to other regions, perhaps recognising the increasing appeal of South America and South Africa in particular.
Salute offers excellent value and a warm welcome. For further information do check out their developing Website.
