Hazelwood Castle dates from 1086 and is now one of Yorkshire's leading hotels and conference centres. The restaurant, housed in what could have been a former Orangery of the Victorian period, in fact is not, and makes an ideal location in which to step aside from the main hotel and enjoy food as it should be enjoyed.

Starters of shallot and savoury risotto with fresh truffle shavings, or carpaccio of tuna with scallop tartare, soused vegetables and caviar with ginger and soy dressing set the pace. With the deer population on the increase, causing more damage to crops, more road accidents as they try to get in the car with you, it is always encouraging to see venison on the menu. It is, of course, also one of the healthiest meats in the market place.

Here a saddle of local venison comes with celeriac and red cabbage and sauce chocolate opera. A pan-fried fillet of line-caught sea bass is accompanied by lentils, tomato fondue and bay leaf infusion. In season go for the delicate assisette of early season Wakefield rhubarb, or a pepper and vanilla pannacotta with candied tomato and basil syrup.

House wines of real quality start at £14.95 a bottle or £3 a glass, and it is also good to see Chilean wines gaining the respect so many of them deserve.

Ye Old Sun Inn is a pleasant village inn dating back to the eighteenth century, nestling in the quiet village of Colton, close to York and Tadcaster. The restaurant serves freshly prepared, traditional dishes with an extensive list of wines and a variety of ales.

Start with wild mushroom tart, a crisp short pastry case filled with sautéed mushrooms, leeks, thyme and tarragon, then finish with blue Wensleydale cheese and beetroot risotto. For main course you could try a fine selection of autumn vegetables cooked in a mild curry sauce infused with coconut milk and served with rice, and flat bread and a choice of hand made sausages cooked in creamy peppercorn sauce. A slice of Yorkshire fruit cake, your choice of real Yorkshire cheese served with a glass of port and crème brulée of the day served with short bread and fresh fruit can bring the gastronomic adventure to a pleasing finish.

It's always nice to find a restaurant which exceeds your expectations and with Aagrah, you will find a whole group of them spread across Yorkshire. At every location, their ideology remains the same, delicious Indian food served in remarkably comfortable and casually sophisticated surroundings. The story of Aagrah began in 1977 and continues to surprise people with their range of Kashmiri cuisine prepared with fresh produce and ingredients.

Expect to begin with starters such as prawn paratha, cooked with garlic, ginger and spices wrapped in flaky paratha and move on to murgh waziri, breast of chicken marinated with spices, grilled and cooked with a tarka sauce or a nihari, a typical dish from Lahore. The flavour of Hyderabad is evident alongside popular favourites of achari and rogan josh. There's also a selection of English dishes with grilled lamb chops or breaded scampi and the eclectic drinks list includes spirits, fine wines and champagnes.
