Nestling halfway down Grape Lane, 1331 arches over the entrance to Norman Court and is part of York's fashionable quarter, which comprises of exclusive shops, independent bars and restaurants. Upstairs they have a contemporary lounge area and a seedy snug; climb a further thirty one steps and you will find their top floor bar.

At first sight, 31 Castlegate Restaurant, looks like a grand Georgian town house, which in fact, it once was. Occupying a prime spot at the top of the historic street and managed by Chef Julius Nick, it serves as a café by day and a candlelit bistro by night.

ASK - York

For some time I made the mistake of thinking that no group of restaurants in the region of 200 locations could hope to maintain the quality for which I was looking. Then one day I decided to put my prejudices to the test, walked into Oxford Ask! and discovered that I could not have been more mistaken.

Ate O Clock

Kenny Noble, one of York's well known chefs, opened Ate O Clock in September 2005 and in a span of a few years, turned it into a restaurant people love to visit. The refuge can be found nestling down an alley in the heart of York; step in and you'll discover a relaxing atmosphere made lively by eagles, clocks all set to 8 o'clock, and film sets in the toilets! The service is considered to be a special feature - warm and personalised - making customers return to sample more of the Mediterranean cuisine.

Almost as Yorkshire as mucky brass Bettys, which always claims to be a small family business, continues to expand without, apparently any loss of direction. Black Swan, The

'Charming' is just one of the epithets you would use to describe The Black Swan at Oldstead, a delightful gastropub in York with an AA Rosette. Located not too far from historic Byland Abbey, the simple and understated décor with oak floors, Persian rugs, and candles emitting a soft glow from atop their perch in brass holders adds favourably to the ambience.
