Who says you need to head to the Mediterranean to seek respite from the harsh winter cold? The residents of Widnes just step in to EFE'S Mediterranean Restaurant and Taverna where the general bonhomie of the place aided by live music and Turkish dance shows keeps the temperature soaring.

On the food front grilled halloumi cheese or Albanian liver served with red onion and Russian salad could help kick things off, followed by French trimmed lamb cutlets marinated and char-grilled with thyme or slices of sirloin steak, slowly casseroled in a rich tomato, mushroom, green pepper, herb and wine sauce. With plenty of menus on offer like the business and express lunch, evening, early evening, entertainment and special days, all add to the appeal of eating out.

If choosing proves difficult bit at EFE'S Mediterranean, they make things easy for you by designing a special Turkish banquet featuring a variety of dishes from a truly vast selection.

If you're on your way to the Lake District and are looking for a comfortable place to break the journey you could spend the night at the AA-recommended Hillcrest Hotel that provides access to the M6, M57 and M62, bringing Chester, Manchester and Liverpool within easy reach.

There are fifty bedrooms, all well equipped, and an attractive restaurant and bar called Palms. The atmosphere is friendly and if you're someone who enjoys a little entertainment there are regular cabaret nights.

As the name suggests, Palms is a tropical themed restaurant that offers guests modern and traditional cuisine, from breakfasts, to lunch and dinner on one hand, and disco dances, and cocktail piano music on the other.

Nelson's bar, a traditional oak beamed pub, serves a wide range of drinks in a nautical setting and is a popular venue with locals. Meetings, events, and wedding ceremonies are hosted well at the hotel.

David and Christine Tearle, the owners of the recently refurbished Coterie have successfully turned their restaurant into a smart and friendly place to relax, and enjoy good food and wine.

The ambience blends the beauty of a country house with contemporary styling to give it a rustic yet modern charm, with bare brick and exposed beams on one side, and white walls and modern art on the other.

The Wine Bar gives customers an opportunity to linger over Coterie style tapas, cheese platters, appetizers of duck and pistachio nut terrine, and baked chicken wings, paninis, pastas, seafood, salads, and desserts.

The à la carte focuses on a selection of scrumptious starters that could include Thai fish cakes and chicken liver pâté. Mains consist of pan-fried and roasted duck served on roast sweet potato with a mandarin and orange sauce; mushroom and blue cheese stroganoff, hearty steaks, and salt and pepper tiger prawns with basmati and wild rice.

To finish, perhaps the homemade vanilla cheesecake might catch the eye. The Orangery caters for private dinners, conferences and meetings.
