The Grosvenor is a large, rather austere Victorian governess of a building which looks a little ungainly from the road side, but from the garden it's a delight of higgledy-piggledy roof lines and soft, warm Cheshire common brick. This is a charming pub with well-spaced rooms and a great outside terrace leading into a small but very pleasing garden, which in turn leads onto the village green. The locals are very fond of it.

Shelly's Restaurant is situated in the heart of Warrington Town centre at the top end of Bold Street very close to the entrance to the New Golden Square Shopping Centre. They adopt a rather different approach, eschewing the use of microwaves in favour of their Aga cooker, apparently called Cromwell. As a result you should enjoy their eggs Benedict for breakfast, a house speciality, or tasty soups and warm baguettes at lunchtime.

Afternoon tea follows on seamlessly, with a choice of sandwiches, a selection of Earl Grey, Lapsang Soushong or Ceylon Orange Pekoe and, naturally these days, a cappuccino. This could be followed by relatively straightforward food in the evening like Aga roasted lamb shank with rosemary, thyme and a hint of red currant; pan-roasted salmon with prawn, chervil and caper butter sauce, and slices of black pudding topped with ginger spiced rocket leaves and homemade apple chutney.

Bear's Paw Restaurant, The

School Lane, Warmingham, Crewe, CW11 3QN [Map]

Handy for those tired of motorway service stations, only 10 minutes from junctions 17 and 18 of M6, The Bear's Paw offers a restful alternative in the middle of a beautiful village, offering traditional hospitality, with flair.

Children have their own menu, the rest of us eat from an a la carte offering starter dishes such as a giant duck spring roll, a toothsome dish if ever there was one, a smoked haddock and spring onion fishcake with Hollandaise sauce, or half rack of pork ribs inflamed by a dash of Tennessee Bourbon and served with a side salad.

We ignore comfort food at our peril and the Bear's Paw takes no such risks, so expect to find homemade beef lasagne, a roast of the day or the ever reliable grilled gammon steak with pineapple and a fried egg, or your choice from a selection steaks and sauces.

A fillet of steak stuffed with Stilton or a trio of lamb chops on a bed of mashed potato, or a pork loin steak with a brandy, honey and sage jus all help towards the gaiety of nations, with lovers of fish likely to head for the supreme of salmon baked with citrus fruits and butter, served with new potatoes and a white wine and prawn sauce. Vegetarians are well cared for, try the vegetable fajita, complete with soft tortillas and a guacamole, grated cheese, salsa and sour cream mix. My money would be on the fillets of red mullet, cooked simply and served on a bed of crab mash.

A relatively short but attractive wine list is good value with house wine starting at £8.95 for a drinkable South African Cabernet.

Warm hospitality, endearing people, delicious food and a laidback atmosphere - these are the things that you look for in a country hotel and The Swan has all these elements firmly pegged in the delightful village of Tarporley in Cheshire. This is a lovely place to visit with friends or family and since they are open for breakfast until 11 pm, numerous occasions and events can fit in easily. The comfortably furnished bedrooms are inviting and merit an overnight stay just so you can let the relaxed atmosphere soak into you.

Food is sourced from local producers and the menu changes everyday to reflect seasonal changes, although typically you might expect to start with chorizo sausage roasted with chilli lemon and garlic, served with ciabatta bread. Move on to a main course of pan fried fillet of sea bass with shrimp hollandaise and crushed new potatoes ending with the apple crumble with egg custard for dessert. The extensive wine list features numbers from France as well as the New World.
