Amigos Mexican Restaurant & Steakhouse
30 Cavendish Street, Ulverston, LA12 7AD [Map]
For over nine years, Amigos restaurant has been offering authentic Mexican fare at the historic market of Ulverston. A range of hot and spicy dishes including huge helpings of traditional food such as nachos, steaks, ribs, tortillas and fajitas - the house speciality - have made this venue popular among locals and visitors alike.
Start with hongos con crema, juicy mushrooms pan-fried with fresh chillies, garlic and double cream accompanied by fresh crusty bread, before moving on to a 10 oz lamb steak marinated in fiery peri peri sauce, served on roasted diced garlic and herb potatoes and onion rings. Those who prefer seafood can order fresh yellow fin tuna diced and gently sautéed with chipotle chillies, red onion, coriander and sour cream with crisp taco shells, salsa, shredded lettuce, avocado and black olives.
The restaurant features a cellar bar where international wines, beers and spirits as well as tequilas and cocktails are provided.

Restaurant at Lindeth Fell Country House Hotel
Lyth Valley Road, Bowness-on-Windermere, LA23 3JP [Map]
Set on high ground overlooking Lake Windermere, the hotel makes the best of its superb views over lake and grounds. Try to make a point of going there when spring turns the gardens into a riot of colour as azaleas take over. Diana Kennedy produces a menu that owes its inspiration to the English tradition at its best, which may account for the regular clientele who keep on coming back for more.
Expect tian of avocado, crab and mixed salad with chive vinaigrette or one of their excellent homemade soups, perhaps tomato, apple and celery. A seared salmon fillet with buttered tagliatelle and prawns or roast loin of lamb with honeyed shallots generally invokes local produce, and a Lancaster lemon tart or raspberry, whisky and caramel syllabub may well arrive as dusk settles over the distant mountains. An agreeable touch is the local Kendal mint cake that comes with the coffee.
There is a very credible wine list.

Restaurant at The George and Dragon
Clifton, Penrith, CA10 2ER [Map]
Comfortable sofas, bare wooden tables, intimate alcoves and open crackling fire make the George and Dragon an inviting place to unwind while the photographs and paintings bring to mind the neighbouring Lowther Estate's heritage.
Restaurants may be proud of their local sourcing credentials but here it is more than just that; owner Charles Lowther delights in demonstrating his family estate's produce in a monthly changing menu, supplemented by a daily specials board. So there might be a twice baked cheese soufflé; roasted pheasant breast with braised cabbage, fondant potato and cider cream, or organic chicken and chestnut linguini. Finish with a cheeseboard selection accompanied by a glass of d'Arenburg The Vintage Fortified Chiraz from Australia.
The specials menu may feature wild boar carpaccio with pear and truffle oil; mussels in white wine; saddle of lamb with mashed potatoes and glazed carrots, and baked vanilla cheesecake.

The Old Crown
Hesket Newmarket, nr Southwaite, CA7 8JG [Map]
For those whose love of decent food sits easily with the desire for an honest pint or two, The Old Crown is your sort of place. The pub has one or two other claims to fame as well, including owning its own brewery through a co-operative of the locals. In 2001 the wife of the then landlord passed away, as a result of which the future of the pub became threatened. The locals formed a second co-operative to buy and run the pub, thus making the Old Crown probably the first co-operatively owned pub in Britain.
As their publicity says, the local inhabitants can now sleep easily at nights knowing that a pint of their favourite awaits them in familiar and well-loved premises.
Like the great majority of pub-owners the new co-operative quickly discovered that there is money to be made in providing food for customers. So now it is possible to take your pick from a choice of about ten curries, and just to make sure that the locals do not lose sight of their native cuisine there are dishes with lamb shank, Somerset chicken, and inevitably the famed Cumberland sausages, to name but a few, as their main item.
The range of beers is a major attraction, bringing in an appreciative clientele from far and wide, as well as keeping the locals happy. Names like Blencathra bitter, Helvellyn Gold, Catbells pale ale and old Carrock strong ale (a lethal 5.8% ABV) pay homage to local spots and high places, on some of which drifts of snow often linger into early summer. However, the queen of them all, Doris's 90th Birthday Ale, named in honour of a long-gone but much respected landlady, appeared to be much enjoyed by HRH Prince Charles when he honoured the pub with a visit in February 2004.
The Old Crown is a celebration of some of the things that are best in "this sceptred isle".

The Bay Horse Hotel & Restaurant
Canal Foot, Ulverston, LA12 9EL [Map]
A very English menu draws heavily upon local ingredients, starting with the fresh local shrimps potted with a little butter, gin and nutmeg and served with hot buttered toast, or cream of tomato and butternut squash soup with croutons and chopped parsley.
There is only one thing better than lamb reared on fell sides - and that is lamb that has lived its life on a salt marsh, more especially the marshes bordering the estuary on the nearby Holker Estate, and the roast rack of lamb served with a red wine sauce and fresh rosemary at the Bay Horse is superb. Leaving on one side the temptation of fresh Scottish salmon, marinaded with limes, ginger and soy sauce, then pan fried in lemon and herb butter, many may find the strips of Aberdeen Angus fillet steak, fried with red chilli peppers and spring onions, then glazed with honey, calvados and raspberry vinegar to be totally beyond resistance.
Puddings are a strength here, starting with the Cape Brandy pudding with cream, an exercise in sheer indulgence. The chocolate truffles served with the excellent coffee hammer home the point and even if they don't there is always the homemade shortbread.
