As Inns go in the Lake District, The Pheasant has to be one of the upper echelon, though a lady columnist staying there recently was somewhat non-plussed to find a commodious pair of old fashioned black knickers, with no obvious owner, in a top drawer of her dressing table.

Restaurant at The Punch Bowl Inn

The Punchbowl reopened in 2005 after a major refurbishment of this attractive 17th century farmhouse and coaching inn in the Lyth Valley of England's Lake District. The restaurant is almost minimalist in its simplicity, with oak beams and floorboards, and white walls and a handsome fireplace.

Perched on the side of the tranquil Troutbeck Valley the Queen's Head was recommended to us by a delightful couple whose garden we went to see . You can't leave the valley without calling they said.
