Restaurant at Wasdale Head Inn

Reputed to be the place where British rock-climbing all began, I for one would not wish to dispute the claim. Certainly as you approach the hotel through the descending gloom of a November evening, possibly after a long day out on the fells, it is a welcome sight indeed and thoughts of log fires, rum butter and hot baths are closely followed by a touch of menu speculation, which is unlikely to be disappointed.

Picturesquely located at the north end of Rydal Water, this house, formerly owned by William Wordsworth, offers undying proof of the wisdom of the old adage, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Little changes here, except perhaps the five-course menu, fixed until you reach the puds, which includes as a delightful afterthought, a cheese board with some genuine local contributions mingling with the rest.

The Swan occupies pride of place at the foot of Lake Windermere at the point where it ceases to be a lake, narrowing into a river that heads fast for Morecambe Bay. The scenery alone is worth a visit.
