The Temple Thai
1 Cavendish Street, Ulverston, LA12 7AD [Map]
Thai food with western touches may have many takers, but if you've lived in Thailand and love to taste some authentic cuisine, minus the frills, then step in to The Thai Temple. Situated in the lovely Lake District market town of Ulverston, the contemporary styling is not a break from all things Thai, thanks to the statuettes of two pretty Thai ladies with their hand clasped in a welcoming gesture, and a miniature banana tree at the entrance.
The wok-fried fillet of haddock topped with a sweet and spicy sauce, and tiger prawns in a yellow curry with spring onions, celery and bell pepper are a house speciality, while the deep-fried marinated chicken wings and spicy Thai fish cakes vie for your attention in the starters section. For desserts there are slices of fresh mango served with sticky rice and topped with a sweet coconut sauce, and banana fritters with vanilla ice cream.

Uplands Restaurant
Uplands Hotel, Haggs Lane, Cartmel, Grange-Over-Sands, LA11 6HD [Map]
You are assured of receiving a warm welcome at Tom and Diana Peter's small restaurant with rooms, just outside the beautiful medieval village of Cartmel near Grange-over-Sands at the southern edge of the English Lake District. The house stands in two acres of lovely gardens with wonderful views to the Leven Estuary on Morecambe Bay. Uplands retains a very good reputation for food built over years of service. The restaurant gets an excellent write-up in the current Good Food Guide and indeed, Uplands is a former Good Food Guide County Restaurant of the Year. The restaurant has two rosettes from the AA for food. All the cooking is done by Tom, who trained locally and at the renowned Miller Howe. Their is not a huge selection on the menu, and only one sitting, with everybody going in to dine at the same time, but so carefully chosen are the dishes that you still feel spoilt for choice, as you want to eat everything.
