Dining at The Black Bull
Rimington Lane, Rimington, nr Clitheroe, BB7 4DS [Map]
Located on a country lane at the base of Pendle Hill in the heart of the Ribble Valley, The Black Bull is a traditional country inn, restaurant and guest house in the picturesque village of Rimington. Housed in a charming Edwardian building, although there has been an inn on the site dating back to the 17th century, the pub's rustic decor with exposed brickworks, wooden tables and open fire in the winter creates an ambience full of character. The restaurant is decorated in a more elegant brasserie style, with white linen and a light and airy feel.
The Black Bull's menu aims to give patrons a taste of authentic regional French cuisine; and makes the most of fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create hearty dishes that are full of flavour. The a la carte menu includes delicious starters of moules et frites with mussels in white wine, shallots, garlic and cream, and French goat's cheese on toasted brioche with grilled pear and truffle honey. Main courses include robust dishes of slow cooked lamb with pork belly and Toulouse sausage with white haricot beans as well as vegetarian options such as herb battered vegetables accompanied by chickpea purée and tomato sauce.
The drinks menu includes a range of local cask ales, a small but carefully selected wine list, single malt whiskies as well as brandies, cognacs and other spirits to perfectly complement any meal.

Essence
2 Scotland Road, Carnforth, LA5 9JY [Map]
Essence is owned and run by the husband and wife team of Donna and John Adler-Conner; John has a passion for taste and has led some of the area's top kitchens. So whether it's being a head chef in multiple rosette winning restaurants or just cooking for small groups, John has an attention to detail and flair for food.
To provide some ideas about the style of his food, starters might include wild duck liver parfait with shallot and French bean vinaigrette or lobster, mango and celeriac salad with baby spinach and rocket salad with light vinaigrette, followed by pan fried organic salmon on sun blushed tomato confit, ratatouille and sautéed gnocchi with red wine and balsamic reduction or rack of lamb with braised lamb shank canneloni, baby vegetables and red currant jus.

The White Bull
Church Street, Ribchester, Longridge, PR3 3XP [Map]
Whilst it is doubtful whether the Michelin inspectors will ever come knocking at the door here, stranger things have happened, and the warmth of the welcome from Jason and Emily is an encouraging start.
Part of the problem is that their website carries menu headings which, on being clicked do not list any dishes at all. This is much less than fair to themselves since a visit reveals ham and chicken suet pies well supported by chips, mushy peas and glutinous gravy, traditional roast pork, gammon and chips, shoulder of lamb and spicy crab cakes. A broccoli, cheese and red lentil tart is wholesome and refreshing, and the no matter what you order the helpings are of the mammoth class.
Puddings really are. Expect to find apple crumble, treacle pie, and Bakewell tart. So for sheer nourishment and filling capacity the White Bull is your bag. The real ale is excellent with Bombardier and Black Sheep there for the enjoyment of some and the misguidance of others. The smooth beer is just like smooth beer anywhere - I am not encouraged to say more.
