Quite Simply French

A real find amongst the more customary northern offerings, though it has to be said that the spread of decent food, and I include indigenous dishes where they really are of good quality, in recent years has been heartening. However, here we have La France staging a convincing display of Gallic culinary influences which clearly appeal to visitors and Lancastrians alike. In this little brasserie alongside the river it is possible to enjoy French cuisine of the simplest and least messed about order at prices that will not take the gloss off the evening. There is a wine list of similar breeding.

In 1993 this historic hotel was acquired by Steven Alcock and a large scale refurbishment was carried out, since when the hotel has steadily regained its stature. Looking out over the Ribble Valley, the location lends itself to an imaginative use of the hotel, which has not been overlooked.

The Valley Restaurant offers dishes that are traditionally British but given a modern twist, with well-sourced, fresh ingredients well to the fore.

A typical menu could offer a Lancaster house smoked salmon and crayfish cocktail, and smooth chicken liver pâté, red onion relish and oatcakes, followed by pan-seared lamb rump, or wild mushroom and brandy strudel or specials of oriental duck breast served on flavoured egg noodles. The restaurant's traditional Lancashire breakfasts and Sunday lunches are also popular among visitors.

The Shireburn Arms Hotel was said to be a favourite of JRR Tolkien's and according to a recent investigation there are a lot of clues to suggest that Hobbiton, where Bilbo and Frodo lived in Middle Earth was based in Hurst Green!

Renaissance

2 St Andrews Street, Plymouth, PL1 2AH [Map]

A new addition to the centre of Plymouth where it offers a refuge from the stresses and strains of the main city shopping centre. Indeed the décor does somewhat resemble an oasis, with palms, lilies and more than a whiff of our colonial past. The brainchild of local businesswoman Lynne Hughes, Renaissance has quickly caught on, not least with the legal community that frequents the nearby courthouse. A small decked courtyard gives a distinctly Middle Eastern touch to the overall ambience.

Cuisine has been invoked from around the world, with special attention paid to seafood and fish. Bouillabaisse soup, pan-fried scallops and bacon make frequent appearances and a specials board that changes daily may offer fresh lobster and crayfish bisque with Pernod and fennel.

They do a business lunch with 2 courses for £8.50 and it pays to keep a lookout for other good value offers. A wine list drawn from a broad spectrum includes a selection of French classics. Parking is nearby, and really you are left with no excuse not to eat comfortably and affordably in the centre of Plymouth.

This restaurant brings you the authentic flavours of the Indian sub continent with dishes that you have probably never experienced before, unique in taste, yet simple in design. Spice of India is situated on Manchester Road, close to Nelson Town centre, in a building that was previously a steak house. But since April 2000, the new owners have added spice to the menu, initiating a culinary voyage of discovery for the discerning public of the area. Whether it is a get-together with friends or a quiet dinner with your partner this venue provides an ideal spot.

For something really spicy order from a selection of balti dishes, which are prepared using onion, green pepper, tomato and fresh coriander, or dansak - a mix of lentils and pineapples - with a choice of meat. Char-grilled specialities from the tandoor include favourites such as chicken tandoori and tikkas, whilst a host of Indian breads are at hand to accompany your meal.
