Dining at The Black Bull
Rimington Lane, Rimington, nr Clitheroe, BB7 4DS [Map]
Located on a country lane at the base of Pendle Hill in the heart of the Ribble Valley, The Black Bull is a traditional country inn, restaurant and guest house in the picturesque village of Rimington. Housed in a charming Edwardian building, although there has been an inn on the site dating back to the 17th century, the pub's rustic decor with exposed brickworks, wooden tables and open fire in the winter creates an ambience full of character. The restaurant is decorated in a more elegant brasserie style, with white linen and a light and airy feel.
The Black Bull's menu aims to give patrons a taste of authentic regional French cuisine; and makes the most of fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create hearty dishes that are full of flavour. The a la carte menu includes delicious starters of moules et frites with mussels in white wine, shallots, garlic and cream, and French goat's cheese on toasted brioche with grilled pear and truffle honey. Main courses include robust dishes of slow cooked lamb with pork belly and Toulouse sausage with white haricot beans as well as vegetarian options such as herb battered vegetables accompanied by chickpea purée and tomato sauce.
The drinks menu includes a range of local cask ales, a small but carefully selected wine list, single malt whiskies as well as brandies, cognacs and other spirits to perfectly complement any meal.

The Walled Garden Bistro
Garstang Road, Barton, Preston, PR3 5AA [Map]
A few miles north of Preston, just off A6, The Walled Garden Bistro is a distinctive dining venue with a rustic yet stylish charm. In 1901, the house was built with a walled garden and, after falling into disuse, so much so that nothing of the original remained, some 15 years back it was recreated using the original materials and plan, and turned into a restaurant. Exposed brick walls, wooden flooring, dangling creepers and wrought ironwork together create a unique ambiance in which to enjoy a meal or break for afternoon tea.
The menu encompasses good, honest British cooking that comes in hearty, flavoursome portions with a modern twist. Try the masterfully created Walled Garden loin of lamb Lancashire hotpot or the pan fried fillet steak. The pesto wrap is a good option in light eats whilst the homemade treacle sponge topped with clotted cream and ice cream is crying out for attention amongst the desserts.
