For some time I made the mistake of thinking that no group of restaurants in the region of 200 locations could hope to maintain the quality for which I was looking. Then one day I decided to put my prejudices to the test, walked into Oxford Ask! and discovered that I could not have been more mistaken.

One of those little gems that crop up from time to time in close proximity to universities, cathedrals and other similar 'quarters'. Number 7 has a double whammy being close to the University and bang slap in between Liverpool's two famous Cathedrals.

Cafe Rouge - Liverpool

Café Rouge has around one hundred branches throughout Britain all offering a wide range of dishes drawn from the French cuisine. Slightly less than half their branches are in or close to London. Almost inevitably the décor and design of each restaurant differs from the others, but there is a general curtsy towards La France.

It's amazing what you can get up to in converted warehouses and Casa Italia is a case in point. A bit rough, but in the nicest possible way, this one provides the setting for a noisy, happy restaurant (if that's not too formal a word in this case - perhaps café would be better) where the real Italian stuff is served up with charm and hilarity.

Owners Neil and Samantha Brown may have different business backgrounds but their common love for food heralded the birth of Ceylon Spice Company. Traditional murals, artefacts and candles accentuate the retro chic feel and the décor comes courtesy of the lady herself.
