Valparaiso Restaurant
4 Hardman Street, Liverpool, L1 9AX [Map]
It seems extraordinary that twenty years on Liverpool still has only one Chilean restaurant. Julio Arellano, the Chilean owner, is a man who takes no prisoners and the chorizo and tortilla are his own make. His links with his homeland are strong and there are a number of places and institutions in Chile which daily benefit from his philanthropy.
Closer to Liverpool the customers of Valparaiso benefit from his expertise amidst the stoves, where seafood in some form is a primary dish. Starters may include the excellent house fish soup, fresh mussels and smoked duck-breasts that have benefited from corn feeding.
Main courses are challenging and exciting with minced beef topped by sweetcorn, paella Valparaiso made with saffron rice and seafood and shredded beef in a tortilla wrap as lead favourites. There is also a good vegetarian selection.
In a country where men are men, puddings are no big deal, but there is a selection for those who have space left in the tanks after fuelling up on Julio's spicier offerings. The respect occasioned by Chilean wines demonstrates itself in the list. All told it comes as little surprise that Valparaiso continues to bring comfort and pleasure to the appetites of Liverpool - and well beyond.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen - Liverpool
14 Paradise Street, Liverpool, L1 8JF [Map]
Gourmet Burger Kitchen was the brainchild of three New Zealanders, who craved after the way that food tasted back home. The chain was instrumental in changing the perception of many people who saw the traditional burger purely as a fast food option; instead they are now seen as more sophisticated products, made using fresh, good quality ingredients.
Their first outlet opened in Battersea and today there are forty-one serving scrumptious burgers. Chef Peter Gordon believes in using innovative combinations, with good quality English chicken and Aberdeen Angus Scotch beef among the ingredients, to make nutritious and convenient to eat fare. They offer chorizo and sweet potato, lamb and minted relish, or the vegetarian portabella mushroom among others. GBK sauces and accompaniments add to their taste.
The menu has nearly thirty different choices and if you feel like biting into pure beef, do try their classic burger with salad and relish - available with or without cheese, this is served with sauces like smoked mayo, spicy satay, fresh chilli and Thai red curry, lending the meal varying degrees of spice.
Some, like the Kiwi, are made using unusual raw materials such as beetroot, fried egg and pineapple, while for fans of chicken, the grilled breast with streaky bacon, salad and avocado is a delicious combination. There are a surprising number of burgers suitable for vegetarians with versions made from puy lentils, potato, green curry or aubergine served with goats' cheese and sun blushed tomatoes. Fresh fruit juices, soft drinks and milkshakes are alcohol free options.
A welcome list of wines and beers complete the picture of a relaxed and modern environment as Gourmet Burger King excels in making the humble burger taste so good.

Bistro Pierre
Cavern Quarter, 14 Button Street, Liverpool, L2 6PS [Map]
Located in the heart of Liverpool's lively Cavern Quarter in an old warehouse building, Bistro Pierre, in Button Street, pleases with its rustic French bistro look and heart warming meals. As patrons enjoy the evening it is as if the buzz outside has seeped indoors to create a cheerful ambience that works the appetite even more.

Cafe Number Seven
15 Falkner Street, Liverpool, L8 7PU [Map]
One of those little gems that crop up from time to time in close proximity to universities, cathedrals and other similar 'quarters'. Number 7 has a double whammy being close to the University and bang slap in between Liverpool's two famous Cathedrals. Essentially a snack place, but not just your ordinary snacks, these are imaginative, tasty and don't cost an arm and a leg. An ideal place for a swift and enjoyable lunch with your eyes fixed on dinner as the culinary event of the day - but not here, they close at 7 pm. Good friendly atmosphere, the sort of place that makes you wish you were back at uni - but you'll cope!

Ei8ht Wine Bar and Restaurant
8-10 Allerton Road, Liverpool, L18 1LN [Map]
A recent addition to Allerton Road, Ei8ht Wine Bar and Restaurant has a way of putting you in the mood for a relaxed dining experience. Perhaps it's the unusually comfortable sofas. Or is it the chic interiors? Maybe it's the college students in Liverpool who light up the place with their buoyancy and laughter. Whatever the reason, this is surely the place to keep in mind if you're looking for good food and friendly service in a sophisticated ambience at reasonable prices.
There are menus for the bar, restaurant, Sunday lunch and a two course evening special menu. The Norwegian Atlantic prawn salad, the Ei8ht breakfast, the goosnargh chicken breast and the British rib-eye steak are just a sample of the excellent food available here. There is a well stocked wine cabinet of course, apart from a wide selection of spirits, draught beers and cocktails. Come here for a business luncheon or before heading out to the city centre in the evening. Ei8ht even has its own London bus to help guests over to their next destination. An exceptionally warm gesture from a 21st century bar.
