To be asked to describe the cuisine, let alone the menu at Colours is difficult to say the least. St Helens College offers a series of first class cookery courses and one of the reasons they are so highly rated is due to the fact that the results of the labours of those concerned with the course are served in a town centre restaurant open to all, bringing an urgent sense of reality into proceedings.

The results of this are that the likes of you and I are able to poll up for dinner and enjoy a meal ranging from good to inspired at a price which brings a new meaning to the words 'good value'. In these circumstances it is not easy to quote a menu - yet stuffed fillet of pork with jersey royal bubble and squeak, buttered broad beans and cider apple jus does deserve a mention.

You could, perhaps, close with a dark chocolate torte and raspberry ripple ice cream.

Well, Mexican had to come to Liverpool some time and here it is - as predictable and varied as ever. All the standard Mexican fare is here, amidst a setting of truly ethnic inspiration. Since the standard moody Mexican is not part of the décor the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, lending itself well to the culture of a Liverpool revivant. An average meal will cost you around £15 which will save you having to consider doing a Mexican on the nearest bank, but if things really are that bad go for Sunday lunch which will lever only £7.50 from your saddlebag - and you get three courses too.

Michael's is a cosy, candlelit, neighbourhood restaurant in the heart of Birkdale with Chef Michael Wichmann at the helm. This is his first solo venture after a career spanning thirty years in some of the world's top hotels and restaurants, including the Michelin starred La Truffe restaurant in Frankfurt, the Savoy Hotel, London and most recently the Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel and Towers, Dubai. Michael aims for a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere in which diners can enjoy top quality food.

Since its opening in 2005 Michael's has received an excellent response from both customers and the media, having been listed in The Times Top Ten Warm Welcomes being voted through to the final three restaurants in the prestigious Restaurant of the Year Awards 2007/2008 by Lancashire Life Magazine. Michael has also often been invited to be the resident chef on BBC Radio Merseyside on Sunday afternoons cooking dishes from the restaurant menu live in the studio.
