Centotre (Edinburgh)
My fiancée and I ate there on a Sunday evening and were very disappointed with both the service and the food. Upon arrival we stood at the desk for over two minutes whilst being ignored by the waiter who was intently shuffling menus. Once seated we were given menus and then left for around 15 minutes before someone bothered to take our drinks order; a further ten minutes later our drinks arrived and our food order was taken. We opted to share the pane rustico to start and then the fiorentina as a main. The bread came very quickly and was then immediately followed by our main before we had eaten any. The fiorentina was appallingly presented - the steak was covered in a huge pile of greasy mushrooms and almost raw potatoes, bland to taste and fatty; a huge disappointment. Understanding that sometimes you order badly when dining out we were happy to put this one down to experience, however, a rather argumentative man came over to enquire ‘what our problem was’; when we explained that we did not enjoy our meal he told us that ‘this is how we do it here’. Rather bizarrely he then rambled on about bringing a raw cut out and challenging me to highlight the fat on it. There was an unpleasant arrogance about him; he seemed completely unwilling to accept that their cooking and presentation of food was what made our meal not enjoyable to us. At no point did we actually seek money off of our bill but when asking to pay we were made to wait for 20 minutes while the waiter sought authorisation for the discount we had requested- rather confusing.
Rogan and Company (Grange-Over-Sands)
We've been there a few times now and the food is always lovely. We do hope, however, that the menu will change this coming winter, to reflect the changing of the seasons. Wild mushroom and pine nut pithivier is our favourite way of starting things off, with its light and delicate pastry and beautiful Madeira sauce. There are all manner of choices to be made; vegetarian, fish and meat but my personal favourite main course after some consideration is definitely the shoulder of lamb. This best exemplifies the high standard of cooking on offer and demonstrates a strong justification for the apparent success Rogan and Company seems to be enjoying. Each time we have been, the place has been pretty much full. No surprises on a Sunday afternoon, when they offer their Sunday lunch, which is usually beef or lamb and all the trimmings, for a mere £9.95. Consider the competition in this area and this place presents you with an amazing opportunity to experience beautiful cooking for such little cost.
Deserts range from peach sable to chocolate cake. This time, my favourite is definitely the chocolate fondant mousse, with pistachio ice cream and caramel sauce - a dessert lover’s heaven. While Cartmel village seems to attract a healthy population of moneyed older people, visit Rogan and Company and you'll be in the company of a relatively younger crowd, who seem more willing to try modern takes on classic dishes. If you're really young and daring, definitely give Simon Rogan's L'Enclume, in the same village, a try and be amazed by his inventions, delivered in miniature and aesthetically dazzling multi course menus. We're incredibly lucky to have somewhere as good as L'Enclume up here, but we are now positively spoilt for having Rogan and Company here as well.
Mortimer's (Mayfair, Soho & Fringes)
Mortimers seems to have changed hands. All the old members of staff are gone but the refit seems to have at last been completed. The menu has changed and prices have gone up somewhat. The food took forever to arrive and was disappointing, huge portion of chicken on my salad but the leaves were a tad over ripe and the interesting piece of brown plastic tube in the fries was a bit of a shock. I can't see it working as a lunch venue now and judging by the number of people there today, I'm not alone.
Prezzo - Ringwood (Ringwood)
We visited on a Saturday for a works leaving do, there were seven of us in total and have to say it was fantastic. Great food, great service, nothing too much trouble and not hurried at all – I would recommend this place. I will definitely go back again.
La Tasca - Wilmslow (Wilmslow)
After eating in various La Tasca outlets for many years, unfortunately the food in the Wilmslow restaurant did not quite match up to the usual standard, even though the food is batch made and simply micro waved. The food arrives after two minutes of ordering, not even giving you time for a drink. The food was cold and the paella was dried up with a shrivelled mussel on the top. Pork arrived instead of lamb, all in all apart from the great service and apologetic members of staff, the food was appalling. Such a shame for this is usually a great place to eat.
Restaurant at St Michael's Manor Hotel (St Albans)
We had heard good things about St Michael's Manor and decided to book Sunday lunch. We had to book a month in advance as they were fully booked, so expectations were high. However, we were very disappointed. We waited 50 minutes in the lounge to be seated, but on being seated saw several empty tables. The service was very poor, as members of staff were untrained and rude, and their approach to fine dining skills was cringe-worthy. My starter was cold but my main was good. Good food, beautiful setting but the staff mean we will not be returning.
Flaming Kilt, The (Kirkcaldy)
When we arrived we were all set to leave as they said that we did not have a reservation, however, our name was in their diary and we were given a seat in the bistro section, which was okay. The food, although expensive, was very good. It would have been nice if the menu made recommendations on which sauces went with what. Also should say that side dishes were made for two. The atmosphere in the restaurant was busy and very good. House wine was excellent at £4 for a large glass. We would definitely return and request a table at the window next time.
felicini - West Bridgford (West Bridgford)
I ate at Felicini on Saturday night and the atmosphere was great. We arrived early and had a drink in the bar, which was quite busy. We were then seated upstairs, which was slightly more serene. The food was great; I highly recommend the antipasto to start. Our mains all looked fantastic; I can only speak for my halibut when I say it tasted amazing. I couldn't eat a dessert as I was too full. It was nice to see that even on a Saturday the service and food didn’t suffer despite it being very busy. I also think it is reasonably priced; four of us with two bottles of wine came to £104 - not bad. Go and decide for yourself, I loved it.
Hix Oyster and Fish House (Lyme Regis)
Hix Oyster and Fish House is the latest of Mark Hix's ventures, and by far the most scenic. Perched high above the Cob at Lyme Regis, looking out over a millpond calm sea as the sun sets, it just makes you crave fish; luckily that’s exactly what you get. As we enter the clean, small upper dining area, Tamara greeted us with an informal and friendly ‘No problem’ to our apology for being half an hour early. A complimentary amuse of whole prawns, garlic mayo and sour dough bread set the tone. Get your fingers in and get peeling. Starters, thank god, are not precarious towers threatening to topple into the splashes of jus but simple, beautiful and perfectly cooked. My sea salad at £10.95 was complete with local oyster, the first I have ever genuinely enjoyed, carpet shell clams, crab, soft mussels and samphire. My other half tucked into spider crab at £17.45 with warm buttered toast, the most expensive starter on the menu but in her humble opinion was well worth it. The joint main course of a mixed grilled fish for two at £46.50, is a seriously eclectic piscine mix, one whole and beautiful John Dory with two whole, soft and sweet scallops, two grilled, creamy lobster, half of it unfortunately was a little dry, and sea bream, a large steak, meaty and delicious, was the star of the show. It was more than enough for two to share; the side of buttered runner beans with mint is a definite must. To finish the obligatory chocolate mousse for her, the look on her face said it all; and a real pudding for me, sweet and sticky plum crumble and thick custard. A really satisfying and above all delicious meal, for the grand total of £120.00, inclusive of drinks and a 12.5% discretionary service charge, was well worth it. The service was exemplary. Give it a go and you won’t be disappointed.
Claude's Creperie (St Albans)
We visited on Sunday and sat down to order what we thought would be a tantalising meal. We ordered two salads; chicken in curry sauce with apples and sultana's, and avocado prawns, both with French bread. After 20 minutes of ordering we were told they had run out of salad, but would make something up? Further 20 minutes of waiting and then the chicken salad arrived. The chicken was not defrosted properly and without any curry sauce. There were old, dry cucumber, old tomatoes and a selection of peppers. Added to this were raw string beans. The avocado salad was not much better. Prawns were badly defrosted and soggy. Toasted French bread arrived a further 20 minutes later. Sorry, but to be charged £8.50 per salad of this standard is quite appalling. We did complain, but was told that the manager was not in and that they were short staffed in the kitchen. Other diners were having the same problems. We paid but will never return and have told many of our friends the same.
