Three Cranes, The (Olney)
Eating at The Three Cranes is a treat. There's always a good and varied choice, and the food is home cooked, plentiful and delicious - especially the desserts. On two nights a week there's a special offer, which is excellent value. I can't wait to go again.
Merchants of Colegate, The (Norwich)
I went to The Merchants of Colegate after about a year, only to be pleasantly surprised by their new menu offering a lot more varied choices and price ranges. It’s good to see, now that money is a bit tighter, that they have an affordable menu, but I can assure you they have not budged on quality. My wife and I enjoyed a two course meal and a bottle of good wine for a mere £50. I had the lamb shank with mushroom and tomato risotto followed by apple tart tatin, and my wife had stuffed chicken breast with asparagus and applewood cheddar wrapped in bacon, mash potato and barbeque sauce followed by hot chocolate fondant, which she thought was divine.
Paradise Island Restaurant (Croydon)
This is a great restaurant with several choices and the manager talked us through them. I definitely recommend this place.
Brasserie at Waterfront Place, The (Chelmsford)
This used to be a great restaurant but I think it has gone downhill over the last few years. I have visited this place many times over the last few months as I live very close by and find the food boring and expensive, especially for the portion size. When I did not receive my starters, I asked to speak to the manager, who I believe was fairly new, and he was not able to resolve it satisfactorily. I was not too happy to pay the ten percent service charge as the waiter was morose and unfriendly. I think this place needs to wake up as Chelmsford is a small town with lots of competition.
Swan Brasserie, The (West Malling)
We popped in to sample the cocktails and after a Pimms and mojito, we were very impressed. The bar staff were informative, and their presentation and panache really made for a great afternoon.
Jackson Stops Inn (Oakham)
The Jackson Stops Inn is now under a new management since the beginning of 2008. The pub has a really pleasant restaurant and bar area with a very comprehensive food and wine menu, which is reasonably priced. All dishes are cooked to order and I enjoyed a delightful meal of lamb shank, whilst my partner enjoyed mixed sausages and mash. Well worth the detour from the A1 for a visit. I don’t think you won't be disappointed.
Al Vicolo (Guildford)
I stumbled across this place a few weeks back and had a disappointing meal. I ordered pork fillet mignon for main, which came with tiny pieces of pork in a syrupy sauce. There were no accompaniments and I wonder why the waitress did not advise me to order something to go with it. Anyone would think that as it is a main course it ought to come with the accompaniments. My girlfriend ordered the red mullet parcel, which was bland but it at least came with other items of food on the plate. The deserts were nice. The bill at over £60 was shocking, as we had only had two unfulfilling courses and some wine. The ten percent service charge was automatically added to my bill and we found the waitress moody. I should have refused to pay the cover charge, but I was so disappointed that I just wanted to pay and leave.
Outsider Restaurant, The (Edinburgh)
I was very unimpressed when I took my family for dinner and was approached by one of the owners, who dealt with our table in an unprofessional manner. The place looks very swish but unfortunately we will not recommend as we felt quite embarrassed. Apparently, you are not able to have a laugh with friends.
No4 Restaurant (Fort William)
The restaurant is nice and the service is okay but not good value for money. The food is neither fresh nor nicely cooked. We were given the wrong soup and the same dressing was used for all the main dishes.
Marquess of Exeter, The (Uppingham)
My daughter's wedding reception was held there at the weekend and as the nervous father of the bride I was immediately set at ease by the amazing friendliness and efficiency of the staff. Everything was done without fuss, including things that I had not thought of, and to the highest standard. The food on the day was beyond expectation in quality, presentation and speed of delivery. The Marquess of Exeter has my unreserved recommendation - especially for those who are planning a wedding or just want superb food, good service and staff who know what they are doing. Well done and thanks!
