We went there for a pre-theatre dinner - great service and attitude - evidenced by willingness to customise menu items to suit my friends' foibles. Great food too – it’s simple, well-cooked and delicious. The four cheese gnocchi in particular had one of our party lyricising all night. Coffee lovers are in for a treat - the cappuccino and espresso-macchiato were works of art in their own right. It worked out to about £20 a head for two courses with wine - highly recommended.

Ate lunch there on Saturday for the first time - good food, attentive staff, convivial surroundings - most enjoyable - will be back.

If you really enjoy good quality food and want to spend a relaxed evening, this is the right place to go. I cannot understand why some people had complained about this place because it's absolutely superb and the members of staff are very friendly and helpful.

I am staggered to read the poor reviews of this fantastic restaurant - we eat at Al Vicolo as often as our mortgage will allow, and have never had anything less than a superb experience. The food is fantastic, award winning in fact, and we’ve always felt welcome. We’ve taken our friends and family there and they’ve loved it. It is in a different league from the bland, overpriced fare available elsewhere and I don't begrudge a penny we’ve spend there for the great times we enjoy.

Review by Gareth (12 May 2008)

I stumbled across this place a few weeks back and had a disappointing meal. I ordered pork fillet mignon for main, which came with tiny pieces of pork in a syrupy sauce. There were no accompaniments and I wonder why the waitress did not advise me to order something to go with it. Anyone would think that as it is a main course it ought to come with the accompaniments. My girlfriend ordered the red mullet parcel, which was bland but it at least came with other items of food on the plate. The deserts were nice. The bill at over £60 was shocking, as we had only had two unfulfilling courses and some wine. The ten percent service charge was automatically added to my bill and we found the waitress moody. I should have refused to pay the cover charge, but I was so disappointed that I just wanted to pay and leave.

I have been there twice now and have been disappointed on both occasions. I agree with Helen’s review. There is nothing wrong with the place; I think the quality of food doesn’t match the price.

I ate at Al Vicolo evening with a friend and my two children aged thirteen and nine. We were made welcome and looked after marvellously well, we weren't made to wait too long after ordering, the menu was varied with some interesting specials, the food was all beautifully presented and delicious, and my friend took photo’s of the desserts! It made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening for all of us. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I think Al Vicolo is one of the best ever restaurants in Guildford. The food is outstanding and reasonably priced, the service is impeccable without rushing you through as so many places these days and the ambience is better than most other places in Guildford. I would not hesitate to recommend it. I love it.

I was surprised to read the review of Helen (7th Aug). I have just been to Al Vicolo and do not recognise the restaurant described in her review. The service was good and the food simply excellent. The menu offers a great selection and the crab risotto is just too good to miss. Perhaps she should try again, we certainly will. I am sure she will be welcomed back!

I think Helen's review is unfair, Al Vicolo's prices are good value for money and the food is of excellent quality. Service charge is common in many restaurants in Guildford and in my opinion Al Vicolo makes a good evening out.
