Having heard about the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar, we decided to go today for lunch. Have to say, we were bitterly disappointed. The place was very busy - particularly given it was the last Monday in March. We were ushered to a small table in a corridor and constantly buffered and jostled by waiters and other customers going to and fro. Hubby chose the halibut at £10.10 and I had the haddock supper. I got three very small pieces of fish although what I did have was nice but they were only halves of a fish. Hubby's halibut was a small portion and thoroughly overcooked. The chips were okay - but could have been cooked more. For the money, the surroundings and presentation are very poor. Cardboard 'plates' and polystyrene bowls are not what I expect when a main meal costs in excess of £10. Also, the tea was awful and when I complained I was told it is made from tea granules - yuk! To add insult to injury we were overcharged by £8.30 on the final bill. If you do feel you want to try the Anstruther Fish Bar - go for takeaway and enjoy sitting in the car watching the view but you would have been better off going elsewhere.

This fish bar is excellent in all departments. I don't eat fish if there are bones and have been there three times and never had a bone even once. The fish was so fresh and moist and the chips were made fresh. I do not agree with the negative reviews as even my kids aged seven and four years, absolutely love this place.

I go once a year to Anstruther Fish Bar just to get a great fish supper. I have never been disappointed and this year was no exception. The fish was perfectly cooked in a delicious crispy batter, and the chips were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Keep up the good work! See you again next year.

Used to visit this fish bar twice a week as it was in my opinion certainly the best in Scotland. However I visited on the 16th of June and could not believe how bad the quality of the food was. Waited for forty minutes in the takeaway only to be served lukewarm fish and chips that were sodden in grease.....very sad to say I certainly won't be visiting again!

Heard so much about this place and visited over Easter. Quite simply the best fish and chips we have ever had anywhere in the UK! There is a bit of a queue but it moves along swiftly and the staff are efficient at getting things moving. A definite port of call next time in Scotland.

Review by The McMorrans (8 April 2007)

Drove thirty miles after hearing how wonderful the food was at the Anstruther Fish and Chip Bar only to be very bitterly disappointed. Had to queue for an hour (there were only around twenty people in front of us) and the service was extremely slow. Lots of fish ready but little of the rest of the menu. The batter was greasy and there was very little fish inside. The chips were "normal" chip shop standard. Definitely will not be returning.
