I've eaten at several ASKs and I am always surprised at the friendliness and efficiency of service, at the quality of the food and the value for money. ASK in York has one added bonus - the fabulous venue! It’s not a cosy place and it’s a little bit too packed in for such a large venue but it’s a truly beautiful building, which is both an asset to ASK and a credit to York. Brilliant!

We ate there on a Saturday evening when it was extremely busy. I didn’t like how they packed people in to capacity - we were sat extremely close to other couples on each side. We also found that whilst the Assembly Halls setting is amazing, it made the acoustics in the restaurant deafening. We couldn’t hear the waitress, she couldn’t hear us and we couldn’t hear each other - not exactly an intimate romantic meal.
However, whilst it was extremely busy, the staff were very efficient, the food came out fast and was delicious. I am not sure we would go back again if we did, we would maybe choose a quieter time.

I ate at ASK-York, while taking my daughter to York University. We had a fabulous, mum and daughter last meal. Great food and great service and I’m now taking her back along with her Dad after Christmas leave. It is as much for the food as the amazing venue. If you are in York then you have to try ASK.

I spent several fantastic weeks over the course of a year in York from Arizona, and I made it a point to eat at ASK almost every day. The food was excellent, the prices reasonable, and the venue exquisite, finished one hundred fifty years before my home was settled by anyone other than Apaches. I can't wait to go again.

I can’t believe all the negative reviews this place has. I have been there now three times and all of those times were brilliant. The room itself was lovely. The first time I had gone with my husband, my best friend and her husband. We were staying over and thought we would give the place a go. Could not fault anything at all! The food was gorgeous, the dessert was to die for (honeycomb cheese cake). The price was also good. Anyway the second time we had gone there, we went to York only to eat the honeycomb cheese cake at Ask. We had also been there this year for a hen party and again it was great. We are hoping to come for this New Year’s Eve, hope they can accommodate seven people. I have told them all if we can get there, we have to go to Ask without a doubt. Please give this place a go next when you are in York.

We couldn't fault a thing! It was a Saturday evening and very busy, but the service we got didn't reflect that. We were greeted very cheerily and, as our table wasn't quite ready, we were asked to wait in the bar where the service was excellent! This carried on throughout the evening and the food was superb. We thought the prices were very reasonable too. It had the WOW factor when you walked in too. Would highly recommend it.

Don't dine here. I was having a pleasant evening in Ask restaurant, York with 26 other friends, until the bill arrived. We had been charged for wine which we did not drink and the duty manager refused to remove it from our bill. At the beginning of the night he suggested 20 bottles of wine for our party. When 16 were on the table, all opened, I told him that there was enough wine and no more was required. He charged us for the bottles we never received, telling me that we have to pay for what we ordered... not what we actually had, but what we ordered!! Ridiculous. He was rude and arrogant and unwilling to listen to our complaint. Eventually, police got involved!! The police officers made the manager remove the wine and service charge from the bill. Too right...he had charged us £200 more than he should have. Ruined what had begun as a wonderful evening.

The surroundings are beautiful, but it doesn't make up for the food; it is awful.

I went a couple of days ago. The food wasn’t up to scratch as it has been before. The waitresses were quite rude and didn’t help us when we asked questions. The bar staff were also not helpful and made us feel very unwelcome. After the meal, some ordered dessert and only a few couple of people received theirs. Some unlucky ones had to ask again if their desserts were ready. Not happy and they won’t be receiving our custom again.

We went on a Sunday afternoon in November; the place itself was not full. Tables were close together making it difficult for buggy or even wheelchair access. Service was slow and when the waitress did appear it was very rushed, the children’s menu is limited. We ordered Garlic bread for starter, when it did turn up 30 mins later it was half a pizza base smeared with half melted garlic and butter. Another 40 mins after that the pizza arrived. Very nice but nothing special. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone with children or for those in a hurry. Pizza Express 2 mins walk away is far better.
