I’d booked early as a special birthday outing with hotel, opera and dinner, and even phoned to make sure everything was okay. When we arrived we were told that they couldn't accept us; a cryptic 'kitchen disaster' was the only explanation. This disaster didn't seem to affect the other diners but did affect the basic courtesy to phone our contact number. I think this is poor customer service. Luckily they redeemed themselves by pointing us to the Le Cafe du Jardin nearby, and we had a super meal.

Among my favorite in Covent Garden, Cafe des Amis never felt to disappoint. I visited recently, although everything was delicious, my red mullet was full of flavour and my friend duck was cooked to perfection. We shared a plate of cheese and the chocolate soup. It was a delicious finish to a perfect meal.

Perfect restaurant - one flaw: very slow kitchen-time. Service is up-to-scratch, but each order takes longer than can be hoped for. On the positive side, it boasts refined, authentic French lunches without half-hearted portions. Very good waiting service and a short, if just perfect, menu. Definitely returning, but with pockets full of conversation.

We ate here early on Monday evening the 16th Feb and the food was delicious. I can particularly recommend the spaghetti based starter and the apricot pudding. The service was attentive without being intrusive.
