It was a very special lunch time experience for a retired group of nurses, we felt spoilt, the food was wonderful and the service was excellent. We will return.

When returning to a restaurant where you have had a marvellous meal, you are always apprehensive in case the experience is not repeated. Well, I am pleased to say that Cornfields has never let us down. Not only is the menu true to its word while boasting that everything is fresh, it is also far from humdrum. Each meal is cooked to perfection and served with great attention to detail. The whole dining experience is enhanced by the owners and the staff, who really go that extra mile to make sure the guests leave feeling they have had a special evening. I cannot recommend Cornfields highly enough, and hope they continue to thrive and succeed.

Dear Graham and Janet, a belated thank you to you both for your superb meal and hospitality for my parents golden wedding celebration.

They were absolutely delighted with the meal, the venue and all the little trimmings that made their day so special. Everyone, without fail, eulogised about the restaurant and the meal. I'm sure there will be repeat business as a result from all those locals present, myself included.

For feedback, we chose Cornfields as when we first met, they made us feel like nothing was too much trouble, even opening on Saturday lunchtime specifically for us and dabbling with the menu and you enthused with ours and your own ideas. Clearly food being your passion and that shone through in both discussion and presentation. In contrast, other venues we briefly considered, appeared relatively uninterested and almost like we were giving them a problem rather than the potential for repeat business. Of the meal, every dish was well very received, but in particular the vanilla panacotta, the sticky toffee, the lamb and the brie, have been mentioned most in numerous subsequent recommendations. Even the whole steamed carrots have received specific praise and attempted to be copied! For myself, I thought the hake was succulent and delicious.

I will, without doubt, dine with you again.

It was a real pleasure and a tremendous success which set the tone for what was a great weekend of celebrations.

Thank you both very much.

Review by D Holland (4 October 2007)

Eating out if you suffer from food allergies is almost always a nightmare, so it was in some trepidation that I organised my mother’s sixtieth birthday celebrations. I picked Cornfields based on local hearsay and felt compelled after such a great evening to comment on my experience. Following a quick chat with the chef, I was able to eat ‘off piste’ as it were, as the dishes that I wanted to order were amended to suit my needs. All of the staff were extremely helpful to us, the food was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. We were well looked after all evening, which made our celebration all the more special. I was also impressed with the extensive wine list that made choosing just one, quite difficult. I am still having dreams about the lamb, whose birthday is next?

We ate at Cornfields for Valentine’s Day. I can honestly say that the food and service were outstanding and the staff very friendly. The menu choice was limited to their Valentine’s special but it was still fabulous. The restaurant area is fairly small and cosy but very pleasant and the bar area / snug by the fire is lovely on a cold winter’s evening. It's quite expensive to dine here but as this was a special evening it didn't matter and the cost is worth it for what you are getting. Great selection of wines too. Recommended.

I read with disbelief the recent review by 'Dissatisfied Customer' and I find time and again that people are so quick to fire off a heated complaint but rarely bother to give praise where it is due. I have had 2 group bookings at Cornfields and can categorically state that their restaurant holds far more than 14 people - in the East Wing where both my parties were held and which is the cosier of the two wings - we had 24 and 20 people comfortably.

The complainant cites a birthday booking spread over 2 tables, and I will lay money on the fact that the person who booked did not make their requirements clear from the outset, as all the staff at Cornfields bend over backwards to accommodate requests and bookings.

Both of my parties were more than adequately staffed, the service and food was superb and the whole event was dealt with in a professional atmosphere. If 'Dissatisfied' wants to attend a restaurant where the staff fawn all over her with fake compliments, Cornfields is not the place for her. If she wants excellent food, a relaxed atmosphere and professional and reserved staff, then she has turned her back on one of the best restaurants in the county. I'm sure she won't be missed.

Review by Matt Rivers (12 December 2005)

Had a fantastic meal on Saturday Night. The menu was good although not extensive (this cannot be said of the fantastic wine list) and the host took his time to take the orders and discuss how we would like the chosen courses prepared. Every effort has been made to add to the dining experience. I like the way guests are shown to the lounge and offered dinks and time to peruse the menus before ordering. I have experienced this at many establishments and is always a welcome start to the evening. Waited a little longer to be seated than expected but not too much of a problem.

The food was presented well and the stilton and bacon fritters were to die for. The main courses were excellent and service attentive but not overly so.

The only downside for me was the decor. It did not live up to the rest of the experience. Some of the art left a lot to be desired (especially in the men’s bathroom). Fewer paintings with decent frames (and a better eye for art - not Ikea!) would ensure the complete evening. Will return at some point but would not rush back.

Review by Dissatisfied Customer (18 November 2005)

I have visited Cornfields regularly over the years, but now I will never return again, following unbelievable rudeness from Janet (owner and Chef) when she cancelled a booking I had made. Her attitude is completely inexcusable. She also somehow seemed to consider that wanting to book for 10 people (even seated at one more than one table) was being unreasonable as their dining room only takes 14. This brought to mind the last occasion when I was there, when a birthday party group was clearly disappointed to find they had been spread over 2 tables, and I remember being surprised at the rudeness from Cornfields then, as it didn't seem an unreasonable request.

Graham Goodhew of Cornfields responded: "This lady telephoned to make a reservation for ten people, and as is usual practice for our staff they check with us first to see if we will take the booking (we do often mid-week as we can be more flexible) as we were not in that night she was told that we could not confirm the booking but we would call her back after checking with us.

We could not take this booking and my Manager called back the next day to advise, she was not in so a message was left on answer machine. We told her that we could not offer that day but offered alternative dates.

We did not hear back from her until several days later when I took the call, she said that she had told all her friends that she had booked and could we change our minds. I started to explain to her that the main reason we could not take the booking was that it was on a day that we already had other bookings and we would not be staffed sufficiently to offer our high standard of service (on that day we were also not going to be on duty). She started to discuss alternatives and as Janet and my manager had been dealing with this I put her on hold and went to ask them what they had told her, Janet said she would speak to the lady so I let her deal with it.

I was standing next to her and although I could only hear Janet

We have visited over several years and have never been disappointed. The choice is excellent, meals are always superbly presented and we thoroughly enjoy our evening. There is a very relaxed atmosphere heightened by the original-beamed bar area where you can chill out before and after your meal.

We have held 2 special functions in the East Wing which both proved successful, which we put down to the relaxed atmosphere, professionalism of the management and staff, and of course the food! The most recent was 2 weeks ago, and many of our guests who have not been to Cornfields before were very impressed and intend to make a repeat visit. We recommend Cornfields highly.

Pleasant enough food from a limited and uninspiring "bistro" type menu. Staff were pleasant but the evening was spoiled 1) by the patronising host, who did his best to make us feel unwelcome and 2) the wrong main course being supplied to one of our party. We do not intend to repeat our experience.

Comments from Cornfields: "We well remember this party, and had merely requested that, as they were bringing eight people on The Telegraph special offer, it would be a help if they could actually fill in the forms and cut out the coupons. Also, unlike many other places that had The Telegraph offer, we still allowed a full choice from the normal menu rather than a restricted one."
