My husband and I had heard fantastic things about The Creel and decided to go there for my mother-in-law's birthday.

I can now highly recommend The Creel - there was a great selection of dishes, and even I, as a non seafood eater, decided to try a fish dish. The food was superb!

When the bill came, it did at first seem a bit pricey, but when you break it down, £150 for 5 starters, four main courses, four desserts, a childrens meal included main meal and dessert, two bottles of wine and four rounds of drinks, it's pretty good value, considering the standard of the food. We will be returning.

This place came highly recommended. We were staying in the area and gave it a try for lunch. The food was OK; excellent crab soup for example, but the fish and chips was just average. Pricewise, it's quite steep for what amounts really to a pub lunch.

However what really bothered me was the attitude to children; I think they can only welcome children who are silent and motionless. If you go elsewhere you'll save yourself some cash and have a more relaxed meal.

I'd been to the inn with visiting family, hoping to introduce them to what was supposedly, a great restaurant. They serve mediocre food, have deplorable service, and are certainly not worthy of the prices they charge. We could have had a better meal and service at the Ashvale chain of fish restaurants, for half the price.

The Creel Inn is without doubt one of the best eateries in the NE of Scotland! In reference to the last reviewer, it has been refurbished and now looks great. It's comfortable and homely and the food is just incredible!

If you love fish you will be in heaven at The Creel Inn. There are many varieties of fish cooked in many different ways. There is also a comprehensive non-fish menu if you do not like fish. I often eat at the Creel and have never been disappointed. Even if we have not booked there can usually be table found somewhere. Staff are friendly and attentive (unusual for NE Scotland).

Tips: Look closely at the packed 'Specials' board. There are hidden gems and the crab soup (locally caught crabs) is just amazing! All in all, The Creel would be my restaurant of choice for a special occasion.

Review by Derek Hughes (23 April 2006)

The restaurant is in a beautiful location with a potentially outstanding view of the sea. The decor, however, is rather downmarket, and the view was obstructed by the contents of an intervening storeroom. The menu seemed appealing, with scallops, sea bass, and other seafood, as well as pheasant, etc. We both opted for scallops, and were very disappointed. They were tasteless, lukewarm, and rather unattractively presented. The mango sauce was quite a pleasant accompaniment, but the vegetables (which included too much starch) were not really appropriate. The prices are on a level with good Aberdeen restaurants such as the Square and Cafe 52, but the quality is not. The quantities were certainly generous, and the staff were pleasant and attentive, but on the whole it was a disappointing experience which I am disinclined to repeat.
