Crooked Billet, The Reviews

We have recently moved to Kingswood and visited The Crooked Billet a few times now, a roaring log fire welcomes you, and the food is faultless, if having a starter and main, make sure you are hungry. My 14 year old says it’s the best food ever. We ate there just yesterday, and chose from the two course menu for £10, we enjoyed it even more so, what with the current climate. Having read the previous reviews I can assure you the menu has changed. If you’re wondering, no I am not involved with the Billet in any form, but would love to be asked! It’s well worth a try, I can assure you, you won’t be disappointed, and the Sunday dinners are a bit pricey, but yum.

I love The Crooked Billet so much under the new management that I have decided to have my wedding there in August; they could not have been more helpful in the organisation of the event. I just can't wait to eat the beautiful food.

We had a meal there recently and it was absolutely fantastic. Having had an awful meal there last year under the old management, it was a pleasure to go again and enjoy such a wonderful meal. What used to be a function room at the back many years ago has now been turned into a stylish dining room. We ate there mid week and the place was almost full. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I have just read some of the reviews on this restaurant and I am not sure they have been written about the right restaurant. My family and I are experienced diners and the food we have been experiencing at the Crooked Billet in Kingswood has been fantastic. The service is exceptional and the members of staff are always pleasant and polite. The menu is varied and the specials are amazing. If you have children then their menu is also good. This is not a ‘kids’ entertainment pub, but my daughter loves it. On the whole I would be amazed if anyone had a bad experience here and find the negative reviews very hard to believe.

My husband, I, our two children and my parents ate at this restaurant on a Friday in January. It was very expensive for an extremely disappointing meal; one meal had to be sent back as it was inedible, with no apology forthcoming. Our coats were slung on a chair and left to fall on the floor. A young child was in the bar with his tea while we were having drinks, the list goes on. It was meant to be my mother’s birthday celebration; well it certainly gave us all something to talk about. We could not wait to get out and would not recommend going.

Three of us went for a meal one Friday night. The inside was very welcoming but as for the food it was disappointing, pricey for average food. Also there was a small young boy in pyjamas playing in the pub, not that it offended any of us but might do to others.

I eat out at least once a week, and normally would not feel the need to write a review. However, my party and I had a fantastic experience both in terms of quality of food and service, and this has now become a regular haunt for all of us. I have read recent reports, which must be grossly misleading since they bear no resemblance to the place I now visit. It looks to me as if some of Billet’s rivals will go to any length because of the strength of competition. Unlike those particular writers I have no problem in putting my name, and not my initials to my review. The Crooked Billet is the place to eat.

What a shame. This used to be an absolutely lovely gastropub with a great menu full of locally produced ingredients. It's now an absolute disaster; avoid.

We had been to The Crooked Billet on various occasions a few years ago, so my partner and I decided on Saturday we would go for a nice country pub lunch, and perhaps a walk after. We drove out to The Crooked Billet, and driving in got excited with the ‘recently refurbished’ sign outside. Walking in, we entered a beautiful decored wooden gastropub. There was however no fire going, and no heating on. It was as cold inside as it was outside. After saying they only had house white wine as they had run out, we sat down to have a look at the menu. Opening the plastic menu we were in total dismay to find they had a tiny menu of burger with fried egg and chips, smoked salmon with thousand island sauce and various other obviously frozen lunches that reminded me of some ordinary chain restaurant you would find in the city centre. The waitresses barely spoke any English and the phone behind us rang so loud for about three minutes without anyone answering it. The place was empty, and just seemed cold and soulless. Of course we decided to leave without eating, and will most definitely not venture all that way out again. All I can say is what a shame it is that such a beautiful place can be so badly run and offer such awful food.

I used to work just down the road from this lovely pub, where we have had some excellent meals, and functions. The menu used locally sourced and organic produce, and it was a pleasure to eat there. That is not the case now. Avoid this place as the food is on par with a chain, the members of staff are clueless, and the food is twice the price it used to be.
