I went there once with a couple of friends and it was really nice. The food was gorgeous and everyone there was so friendly and there’s also a nice atmosphere. I can’t wait to go there again.

I'm with Charles in being a local drinker and eater at the De La Pole Arms, and agree totally in the improvements that both Matt and Trina have brought with them when they took over the licence from gastropubs a few months back. It is a very nice pub set in a pleasant, undulating countryside with good views of the church opposite. Pleasant in winter with a large roaring fire in the bar, also pleasantly cool in warm summer evenings. Food wise, it’s certainly reasonably priced for the quality and never had a problem in getting a table. Staff, though young are always welcoming and the service at the bar is generally swift and the quality of the ale, usually Adnams plus guest, lagers, ciders and stout have improved and are usually good. Overall, this is a very good pub to while away a lazy, sunny afternoon or to warm up after a chilly and wet autumnal walk. Note: the pub is in the middle of nowhere so, unless you’re local, you’ll need a car and preferably a driver too.

It’s my local and I also eat there. Ever since Mat and Trina have taken over it's gotten better - great beer and food. The service is excellent and it’s in a wonderful location. I'd probably name it the pub of the year.

I find it interesting that the previous reviewer was refused a table for two at 8.30. Having eaten there repeatedly over the last few months, I have found them very accommodating - even phoning them when I have not made a reservation but can only get there for 8.45 because of train links from London. Occasionally they do have theme nights when they are fully booked, which I think is perfectly acceptable.

Review by Lesley Gowers (11 August 2008)

My husband and I went along to the De La Pole on Friday; we arrived at about 8.30pm and were told that the kitchen was closed although they were clearly still serving food. I would have thought that catering for two people would not have been too difficult especially as it is a bit of a trek to get to the De La Pole. Not a good way to get a new business off of the ground I would think – we certainly will think twice before dropping in there again. We have used the De La Pole in the past and have always been accommodated. Since moving to this area four years ago we have got used to the early finish for the majority of restaurants who seem to shut kitchens at 9.00 pm – excepting of course Chinese and Indian cuisine who do cater for later arrivals. But 8.30 is the earliest refusal we have had. Booking can be problematical as I commute and am held hostage by the vagaries of the railways.
