In August, 2009, leaving York at 5.30, we drove straight across the moors from Pickering and arrived in Goldsborough in time for a coastal walk and to breathe in deep lungfuls of sea air. It was a perfect start to a wonderful evening at the Fox and Hounds. We ordered a simple starter of green beans with olives for me and calamari with chilli for the guvnor. In each case the main ingredient tasted delicious with the dressing serving to highlight rather than hide. The guvnor declared his pork loin with cannelloni bean mash the best piece of pork he'd ever had, meltingly tender but not at all fatty. My grilled plaice tasted like it had just swam up the coast that afternoon, delicious. Shepherd's purse blue and oatcakes, warmed slightly, with a generous handful of cherries and a glass of red whose name I've forgotten, rounded off the meal. They have generous portions, attentive service and reasonable price for the quality. Only criticism is the wobbly table but by the time we started eating the wobble was forgotten.

This restaurant is well worth visiting. Lunch on Saturday was excellent. Cheap it isn't, but neither is it over-priced and the portions are spot on, if you want a great plateful of food then I suggest you go to any of the growing number of places that are putting quantity over quality. The welcome was friendly and the whole place was spotlessly clean and absolutely charming. This is certainly somewhere we will be visiting again.

We went to the Fox and Hounds to celebrate our 47th wedding anniversary. The meal was awful and the owners were extremely rude and unprofessional.

I went a few times before the fire, and returned with friends in early November. The food is still good, but the portions are much reduced, and it is poor value for money now; I won’t go back.

I have been there twice over the last New Year holiday. The food was fantastic and I have booked it again for Sunday lunch and dinner during this years Christmas holidays. I must admit my mouth waters when ever I think of this superb restaurant.

This has to be one of the most charming, and still largely undiscovered gems in the North East of England with a wonderful ambience, superb food, and a marvellous setting. You won't be disappointed, but booking is pretty much essential.

We have been going to Runswick Bay for 15 years, it’s the best kept secret on the North Yorkshire coast – it’s cosy with consistently good food. I’ve been there nine times and have never been disappointed. Long may they stay!

It's a lovely spot with delicious food. We keep going back, and wish them well with their planned reopening after the fire in May. In North Yorks, there's too much ‘over-chef-ed’ places but indifferent food coming off long menus, with no real attention to provenance or seasonality. Not there - go and see for yourselves, and take a good walk along the beautiful coast nearby to work up an appetite for three freshly-made, tasty, courses of usually locally sourced food. The fish is always superb, and the game good too. It's child-friendly and friendly to grown-ups too. The food is simple yet sophisticated - traditional with a twist and the wine-list is short but well-judged and there's Hoegarden on tap. My only worry is that it'll get too busy and we won't be able to get a table in the future.
